Pregnant after 35

Good hCG, bad progesterone

So during my last pregnancy-- when ended in a miscarriage due to a trisomy-- my hCG and progesterone measured OK.  I am now pregnant again (5 weeks and 3 days along) and found out today that my hCG levels are good but my progesterone is low (9.5 on week 4, day 6).  My ob had me do bloodwork on two day, two days apart, so we have comparative numbers.

She wants me to take a progesterone supplement starting tomorrow and to see a maternal fetal specialist for a high tech ultrasound on Thursday to date the pregnancy and determine viability.

I am assuming the worst: that this pregnancy will miscarry.

Any words of wisdom or experience for me?  Anyone know what it means for hCG to be good but progesterone to be low?

TIA

  • I don't know anything about what those levels mean, but I'm hoping for the best and that a supplement is all you need to keep that baby nestled in and happily growing.

  • Don't assume you will miscarry.  Raising the progesterone level is relatively easy from what I was told.  While of course it could be a sign of something wrong, it doesn't necessarily mean it.

I did IVF and my hcg levels were good but my progesterone was low through the first 10 weeks.  Around 8-10 weeks is when the placenta takes over the production and sometimes before that, you don't have enough.  The supplements can make a difference.

Are you taking the vaginal suppositories?  Because we did IVF, I automatically did the progesterone shots.  When my level was low- I think it was 11 - I can't remember- they had me increase the amounts.  I had done the vaginal suppositories a different time (they're messy by the way- use a panty liner).

At 10 weeks, I was able to stop the shots because my progesterone started rising to good levels.  My doctor wasn't optimistic about the viability of my pregnancy either (I'm putting it mildly).  I'm now 24 weeks pregnant - so doctors aren't always right.

Good luck- sending good thoughts your way!

  • My progesterone was low with my first and current pregnany. I was on suppositories until 13 weeks. I know for sure that it helped me.... I think the brand I used was prometrium... GL!
  • my prog started out a little lower then they would like to see so my RE put me on progesterone (Crinone) right away. So I've been using it since I found out I was pregnant and he wants me to continue until I am 12 weeks along.

If your HCG levels are good and you go on a supplement, things should be good! At least you can get some answers tomorrow. Hang onto hope!
