I know I mentioned this in Candi's post but I thought I might throw this out there in a separate post.
1) Eczema can be either part of an auto immune issue - stress, foods, etc can trigger outbreaks
or 2) Eczema is just from dry skin.
If your baby has #1 - there are a lot of things you can do to help minimize the outbreaks - including dietary changes
if your baby has dry skin, many times its caused by perfumes in soaps and not lotioning them up enough. Even though I LOVE Aveeno, it still has some perfumes in it.
My pedi recommended using Cetaphil lotion cleanser. It's gentle enough it doesn't have to even be rinsed off. Followed by a SLATHERING of cetaphil lotion/cream (comes in a jug).
This saved Avery's skin. When it gets bad, I mix the cream w/ vaseline.
When I bathe her, (and it's way better than it was), I don't wash her hair until the VERY end, so she's not sitting in any soaps.
Also - limit baths (if you can - we can't because Avery can manage to get FILTHY every day even on days she's inside...not sure how she does it exactly) and make sure the water is luke warm.
Re: babies with eczema/dry skin issues
We had to take DD to a pediatric derm. and she suggested using Aveeno Advanced Care cream and wash. It is for "compromised skin" and I found it to be very hard to find. I finally ordered a ton of it off of drugstore.com and it is working v. well for us - just thought I'd let you know what a dermatologist suggested...
