NEFR: totally stupid baptism question

The only baptisms I've been to lately have been catholic.

At the lunch after the baptism, they both had cakes that said "God Bless Baby'sname"- is that just a catholic thing (those baptisms were all catholic) or do other people do that too? We're having a lunch for our families after Noah's baptism (on Mother's Day!) and I want to get a cake and was wondering if that's ok to put on the cake?

See? I told you it was dumb.

  • I am pretty sure that's what our cake said too even though I thought it was awkward lol

  • Not a dumb question... Baptism is being annointed into christianity, so I think you're asking God to bless the baby, regardless of specific religion.

haha I know! But "God love Noah" seems sort of pretentious (though true!) and "Congratulations Noah" seems stupid since HE didn't do anything... I'm at a loss!

  • This was the cake my inlaws had made for my dd when she was baptized (I'm Catholic, dh is Lutheran - it was a Lutheran baptism)

I don't think it's a Catholic thing to have God Bless . . . on a cake though. I know at some relatives baptisms they haven't had that so I would think that you could do whatever you wanted.

ETA - if you couldn't tell it just says her name. No God Bless or anything else. I'm pretty sure they did the same for Noel but apparently I never took a picture of his cake Stick out tongue

  • For both my children the cake just had their first and last name (we are Protestant).  But I don't think the "God Bless" is Catholic.

  • I am Catholic, but I skipped the whole God Bless and/or cross shaped cake for DD's baptism- I just think they are a little much- it's not like @ a wedding reception people have religious cakes if they have had a religious ceremony.

The symbol for our parish is a Fleur de lis, so I had a cake made in that shape and it just had her first name subtly written in it- call me a dork, but this is something I really thought about.  I loved that cake and I am quite excited to order another one!
