Okay, I'm not a newbie to CDing but I've got a question

So...C leaks out of disposables at night, disposables with a PUL or wool cover, and cloth all equally.  The last week or so he's been waking up once a night screaming (he's getting used to sleeping in the toddler bed - which was totally his doing btw) so I change him then since we're both up anyway.

So last night I put him in our one and only BG organic AIO, figuring that I'd have to change him during the night anyway so I may as well use cloth.  Well, when he woke up crying he hadn't leaked so I left his diaper alone.  This morning he wakes up and lo and behold no leaks.

First, I'm super impressed with this diaper.  Second, it stunk to high heaven of ammonia so I likely won't use it again overnight.

Lastly, and here comes the question, C's bum & pretty much everywhere covered by the diaper was red.  Not rashy but just red like he had a sunburn.  I wiped him off using a cloth wipe & wipe solution like normal, then thought better of it and washed him off with soap & water & let him run around diaperless and after a while the red was gone and he looked perfectly normal.

Has anyone seen this before?  Any thoughts what it was from?

  • yes ma'am.  I had this problem with the microfiber that was in ds's BG 3.0.  I changed from the microfiber and am using hemp now and no more ammonia smell, and no more redness ;) The ONLY time we had this issue was with his overnight diapers because there's so much more pee in the diaper than usual

But yours don't have microfiber right?  I would guess maybe you need to strip them.  Worth a shot.  :)

  • Yeah, it's just the organic cotton inner or whatever.  Since it's only one diaper, it'll be easy to strip.  =)

  • ammonia + reaction sounds like detergent.

We have been using Charlie's Soap for a while now with no other reactions.  Of course, we don't usually use cloth at night so that could be the reason why.  He's usually not in the same diaper for more than 3 hours or so.

Either this or perhaps he's reacting to the wetness next to his bum all night.  You could try it again with a stay-dry liner of some sort to see if the same thing happens.

Is the redness because there's no fleece lining to wick away the moisture and it's just the wet cotton insert up against his skin?

My baby isn't here yet, but it's been something that I was wondering about when I saw the BG Organic.
