C&P am I crazy? Re: # of wipes

https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/35535405.aspx

Even when I used disposable wipes, I never used 6 per diaper change! Am I crazy? I use 1-2. Thats it. Apparently I'm the odd one out on 0-3. Am I being unhygenic?

  • I tend to use more disposable wipes than cloth wipes if it's a messy diaper change. Disposable wipes don't grip and grab everything as well as a dry cloth wipes (or wettened one) will.

Still, I use 0-2 cloth wipes and 1-3 disposable wipes for the messy diapers.

  • I use 1-2.  When I watched my nephew all the time (they used disposable diapers and wipes) I would probably use 1-2, 4 at most, and that was if the poop was really, really messy and sticky (after he started solids)

I read a few people say they can use up to 10!  All I can think of is, what a waste!

ETA:  Actually I only use 1-2 for poop.  If he doesn't poop I don't normally use a wipe, I normally just let him air dry for a minute ;)

  • I dunno. Disposable wipes aren't the best absorbers, so I can see using a lot for poops. Also, boys tend to need more wiping: more creases and junk to clean off...
  • Ditto Sunny - on the occasions we've used disposable wipes, I do tend to use more (probably more like 2-3 for a dirty diaper) as opposed to 1-2 with our cloth wipes.  It used to just be one, but I've gotten in the habbit of doing a 2nd one for a lot of the teething poop lately.

  • Erm... even for messy dipes I'd say I average 3 MAYBE 4 wipes.  It's a scary situation if we need more than that!

  • Indifferent

    How ridiculously wasteful.

I use 2 (cloth) per large poop, 1 per small poop, 1 per pee if he's been sitting in it a while (nap, car, etc), and all just with water. I've never used a disposable wipe outside of the dryer-sheet type that they give you in the hospital. The only redness (I can't even call it diaper rash) Max has ever had on his bum was caused by 1) me drinking grapefruit juice (oops) and 2) wipes that were too rough, which I replaced.

I would guess that these people concerned with being hygienic don't wash their hands for the recommended 20 seconds after they use the bathroom.

This is true.  Often I have to do one last once over just to make sure that I got everything clean.  The color variations of all the pieces and parts sometimes camouflage leftover poo...  Tongue Tied

  • I used a lot more wipes per change when using disposable wipes, like 2 or 3 with a poop diaper.  Now that I use cloth, I only need one.

  • It's not shocking though. I mean, people use too many napkins, too much TP etc etc. It would make sense that they would use too many wipes if that matches their other paper uses.
  • i think even the craziest teething poos we've encountered were just 3 cloth wipes. Most of the time it is 1-2, and the second is usually just for good measure.

we sometimes use disposable wipes when out and about, and i had a world-record setting nasty poo to deal with, and ran out at 4 disposable wipes. I probably could have used 8 for that mess, as it was up his back, down his legs, etc. Disposable wipes just don't have the texture to get things as clean, and you have to use a lot more "scrubbing" to get the sticky stuff off.

  • We used disposables for the first week at most.  It was amazing how many you use when it's a new baby and you have a box at the ready.  We went through almost a whole box in one week.  They aren't as thick, they don't pick up as much, it will seep through to your hand, smear around... oh it's gross.

We soon switched to cloth and realized how few we needed to get the job one.  Like others, I think I use a max of three and that is for really icky poops.

  • On normal or slightly messy poops (so, most of the time) I usually use 2-3 wipes (disposable), the last of which is a once-over front-to-back to make sure that everything is clean.

Now, if you'd been to my house in the last couple of days you'd probably be shocked at the number of wipes I've used, but we're having exploding diapers, soiled clothes......at the toddler level, KWIM?

  • I only use one or two as well
