Hates Tummy Time??

He will play on his back all day long, but everytime I turn him over on his tummy he starts getting upset. I try to put him on his stomach about 6-9 times a days. He is only on his tummy for about 2-3 mins at a time because he gets so upset. He needs more tummy time to strenghten his neck muscles so........... Any ideas?

Re: Hates Tummy Time??

  • I read in the latest issue of Parents magazine that you can also try giving him a minute or two of tummy time after you change his diaper on the changing table. That should add up. Also try tummy time on your lap.

I read to my little one while he is doing his morning tummy time  (he lets me keep him on his tummy the longest after the a.m. feeding). He likes the brightly colored pages and the funny voices I use to read to him. That also helps keep him not so frustrated on his stomach.

    Hope that helps!

  • DD's not a fan either, but be persistant.  I lay on the floor on my stomach and talk to her and we play with toys.  I've done the changing table thing on occasion, which works well too, its something different to look at.

Maybe try putting a mirror in lo's line of vision, it gives them something to look at and incourages them to lift their head.  Or try propped up on a boppy or a similar type pillow with you right there.

  • My DD is the same way, I tried the changing table idea but she is so stubborn she won't look up for anything!
  • It's not just about strengthening the muscles, it's also about preventing a flat head, so you may want more than 1-2 minutes at a time.  Even if it adds up, it's still not giving a substantial length of time (at one time) on the tummy.

My DD hated tummy time in the beginning but we pushed thrrough and she got used to it.  My DS is the same way...hates it and screams.  At his 2 month appt. I mentioned to the pedi I thought he was developing a flat spot (he is) and that he screams, etc. and he said, let him cry for a bit.  It's ok.

And you know what...after a few minutes, my DS stops crying and either falls asleep or plays for awhile.  After he's happy for some time, if he starts crying again we just pick him up.

You could get down on the ground with him in the beginning and hold toys up in front of him, etc.  Also, you could start out laying down and putting him on your chest to help get him used to it.

    Good luck!

  • You?re right ? plenty of Tummy Time will strengthen his neck, along with arms and core muscles.  Most babies dislike TT, so Pathways Awareness has developed some tips to make it easier on you.  Check out their website: https://bit.ly/8IhuuF.  Capitalize on those few minutes and work up to longer stretches.  Make sure you?re down there with him and offer TT during his most content time of day.  Soon you?ll both be TT pros!
