2nd Trimester

"1st Tri Fail"

What is a "1st Tri Fail"?  I keep seeing people with these siggies and I don't understand...

Re: "1st Tri Fail"

  • I believe it means you aren't obsessed with following the 1st tri rules like not eating deli meat, no caffeine, etc.

  • Oh wow. I'm definitely not a first tri failure. I'm taking every precaution with this pregnancy. It's hard to give up those things for 9 months. But I think this pregnancy has forced me to learn what is and isn't a healthy diet and by sticking to a healthy diet for 9 months I will have a better chance at teaching my children healthy eating habits.

I drank soda with every meal before LO came along and practically lived for my next fast food meal. I thought eating right was too hard or took too long to prepare. Now I think it's easy and cheaper to eat healthy!

I don't see why people are putting that in their siggy's like it's something to be proud of that you still drink caffeine, eat deli meat, and don't change your diet- IMHO.

  • DH and I live by the rule that everything is ok in moderation.  Only exceptions in my mind would be smoking and drugs.  When I was pg with DS I had a glass of wine a few times, for special occasions.  I haven't had anything this time around but I'm not against it either.

  • I wasn't a saint when it came to my 1st tri, I still had small servings of coffee. But I'm not gonna announce that to everyone every single time I post.

  • I'm definately a 1st tri fail!

I eat deli meat (cold), drink coffee, drink pop, sleep on my back, eat hot dogs...I even eat my egg yolk runny and it's darn delicious!!

  • I don't understand "1st tri fail" either.  I'm high risk so in my eyes just making it from 1st tri to 2nd tri, 2nd tri to 3rd tri and 3rd tri to baby is a success.  We should all have "1st, 2nd, 3rd tri success" badges!

  • Wow...I suppose I respect each woman for their own choices, but I certainly have been living my life during my pregnancy. Of course, I didn't smoke before, so that wasn't an issue, and I haven't had any alcohol (although, I'm not against anyone who enjoys a few glasses of wine over the 9 months), but I have eaten deli meat, tuna, drank diet soda and even gone as far as soft cheeses GASP!! Surprisingly, my LO is perfectly healthy and I am having a dream pregnancy!

If being a 1st tri "fail" means having a happy, enjoyable pregnancy that I can reflect back on and feel that I enjoyed to my fullest, then sign me up as a first tri failure!

    Wow.

I'm all about doing what I'm truly supposed to be doing and understanding fact vs. myth, but I think it's kinda stupid to create a badge to pretend that's being a rebel or defiant.

Because seriously, if there was a magic potion or set of bizarre rules that would guarantee me a healthy pregnant, you bet your sweet asss I'd step in line and take the magic pill and eat whatever crazy diet they say.

I hope you don't fall off your high horse, Donna.  Believe it or not, women gave birth to healthy babies before "What to Expect When You're Expecting" was written.  I gave up most of that crap but at least I'm not a know-it-all prick to people who don't.  As long as you're not smoking cigarettes or guzzling down a six-pack while pregnant, chances are that things will be fine.

I was advised by my midwives to eat the way that I am to ensure the healthiest pregnancy possible. Didn't mean to offend anyone who may be feeling guilty about potentially hurting their child. And the view is fantastic from my high horse, I can see Russia from up here.

So your mom probably drank soda, coffee, ate deli meat, and probably fish too during her pregnancy... so she probably didn't have the healthiest pregnancy possible, huh? And she should feel guilty about the potentials that hurt you.

Ahhh get over yourself. All MD and midwives have to tell you to eat healthy. Its how they get paid. Hell, I'm a nurse, and I'm suppose to tell people how to eat healthy. But I can tell you that you shouldn't eat beef because its fatty, and fish is way healthier for you to eat than chicken or any other type of meat. But yet--your not suppose to eat it during pregnancy...so technically your not eating the "healthiest"....

I didn't take it as bragging either, but she needs to also realize that taking every precaution necessary doesn't necessary do anything. She could live in a bubble for 9 months--like she's doing, and still end up with a complication.

And we put it in our siggy, because we are proud of it. "hey we're in 2nd & 3rd tri now....and we did these things that everybody has been freaking out about--and yet our babies are just fine".

People make pregnancy so stressful, and so "omygosh, I need to just stay at home and do nothing because if I go outside I might cause damage to my baby, or if I eat this tuna sandwich--it might give my baby 4 heads and 6 arms" Honestly? It's pretty frickin' ridiculous.

  • I don't see anything wrong with the badges, myself.

I also don't see anything wrong with choosing to stick to all the "rules"

It's a personal decision, and while I personally couldn't bring myself to have any wine, I do eat the occasional Subway sandwhich, and I have a cup of tea in the morning. I don't think it's right, however, to come in here preaching to other women about how they should live during their pregnancies.

  • I LOL at people that say that they do certain things because it's the best for the baby. So I've LOVE for them to tell me what I did wrong to "cause" 3 miscarriages? I refuse to live in a bubble and I understand what will happen will happen and I am living my life. It's amazing that I have a healthy child with another on the way.

BTW- Why haven't we heard that Kraft Mac & Cheese is evil lately? That was all that was going around when I had DS!

If you think you know what's best because of your training and experience you are entitled to carry on your pregnancy as you see fit. We all do our own research and believe what we believe as far as what is safe.

IMO if there is the tiniest iota that something I voluntarily consume (or regularly consume) could hurt my child in any way or lead to life of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, or whatever else I'm not gonna eat it/drink it/ snort it. It's not worth the risk no matter how "good my chances are things will be ok". It's all up to chance really if you do unhealthy things and your baby is fine or you do perfectly healthy things and your kid ends up with autism. It's just luck.

I didn't mean to be braggy. I just think it's strange to have a "first tri fail" badge if in fact it means you are rebelling against cautious (maybe overly cautious to some) prenatal care.

See--I didn't take her original post to mean that she believed this was some magic potion to have a healthy baby--but that she's learned to make better choices, kicked her fast food/soft drink habit and now understands what a healthy diet is... I say KUDOS to that! (Her second post, however... I just hope she was kidding.)

I followed all of the (valid) rules with my first pregnancy, and something went wrong that was completely out of my control. I'm a little more lax this time around (like more sodas here and there) but I'm not running around judging those who cut out caffeine completely.

We're all just doing our best... whatever that means to each of us.

I know where you're coming from. I started eating healthier a few years ago (and no, I don't preach about it or bring it up to people IRL) and I get sooo many comments on it. I don't understand why it's okay to comment on someone's choices in food--ESPECIALLY when it's healthy choices.

But you know...whatevs! You do get fairly used to it after awhile.

I have an occasional soda, I eat pasteurized soft cheeses... and posts about "I ate a fingernail full of feta and then tried to throw it up because I was afraid I was going to have a miscarriage!" posts annoy me. But the badge thing? Just seems silly and discredits those that are just doing their best.

Well pin a rose on your nose. So so so annoying...

    made me LOL

Oh wow.

I don't see why people are putting that in their siggy's like it's something to be proud of that you still drink caffeine, eat deli meat, and don't change your diet- IMHO.

it's because they are idiots. i'm glad someone asked about the badge... i thought it meant you miscarried early or something.

i also see you don't have a badge proclaiming it to everyone. why not stay on topic here? most people don't care what you're eating/not eating. and if you have a badge making a statement about it, presumably it's because you want to crow about it.

Oh Good Lord already! I'm not perfect. I plan my meals. And it happens to follow my nutrional guide my midwife gave me. Love how I'm getting attacked for EATING HEALTHY and choosing to eat healthy FOR MY CHILD. I didn't say "you are all bad because you drink soda" I said "I don't think soda is good for me now, I just want juice". I'm not the soda police. If you like soda- drink it. I stopped so now there is more for you.

Why is everyone attacking me for saying I like to eat healthy and its not as hard as I thought it would be?

Good gravy. I got called a know it all prick, that I live on a high horse, and that I think I'm perfect because I said I eat healthy. What backwards planet am I living on here??

    This.

My thoughts exactly. "WOW, I RISK LISTERIOSIS EVERY DAY BECAUSE IT'S FINE IN MODERATION!!!" Ignorance is nothing to be proud of imo.
