What is the earliest you plan on taking the baby on a trip. DH and I were debating this last night and just curious on other Mama's opinions. We were discussing everything from a low key weekend to a week long trip to Disney.
We won't fly with Kate until she has been vaccinated at 6 weeks.
We will be heading to New Orleans for a Sip and See when she is between 5-8 weeks but driving there.
We are spending Thanksgiving away (driving - she will be about 3 months) and will be flying to Orlando to visit my family for Christmas when she is 4 months.
We're planning on a long weekend with LO when she's about two months old. We're taking her by car to see DH's twin brother. He's in the military and most likely won't get leave to come for visit to see her.
I had a friend travel by car with her twin girls at 6 weeks, and she said it wasn't too bad as long as you have someone to help you.
We've been travelling with DD since she was a few months old. We are big road trippers, campers, weekend away type peeps...and she's been coming with us. Her first plane trip was at several months old. She did great, and has done well every trip since then. We took her to Disney at 18 months old, then again at the end of February.
DS went on his first trip, from FL to IL via plane (just he and I) at around 2 months.
This baby will be going on a 3.5 hour car trip for his "welcome to the world" party at around 3 weeks. We have no large trips planned, unless we decide to go to Cancun on our "annual family trip" in November, which I REALLY doubt.
My parents are renting a beach house in Wildwood, NJ a month after LO is due - mid september. I said if she wasn't real late and came on time, we could go down for the weekend. It wont be incredibly hot and it would be a nice relaxing weekend. He thinks it is too early.
Also, my parents really want us to go to Disney with them the first week in December. She will be 3 1/2 months. While LO wont remember the trip at all, I think it would be fun to take her and I would love the memories.
Thankfully, both trips are ones that we can decide on at almost the last minute.
Just curious how you all plan on doing this within your families.
Disney makes me laugh! Even at dd's age I would dread taking her to disney. However I think the first 5 months or so would be easy to travel with a lo because they sleep most of the time. I would go for the low key weekend!
We hope to travel with Betsy for 4th of July weekend--not far, just to my parents' house two hours away. If she comes on her due date, she'll be about 3 weeks old.
We're also planning a week-long beach stay in early August when she's about 7-8 weeks old. I'm not sure about that, though--it involves a three hour drive plus a two hour ferry ride to get where we're going.
Thanks for all of your opinions. I guess we will see where her vaccine schedule falls.
I do not think twice about it because my parents carted us everywhere when we were really little. DH did not go on his first vacation till he was almost 5.

I think DS's first Disneyland trip was around that age. He slept a lot, and was fascinated by his surroundings when awake. It was actually easier to take him when he was so little. They're much more portable and have less complaints.
The biggest problem we had vacationing is pretty much once DS was sleeping through the night, he could not be in the same room as us. He wouldn't relax enough to fall asleep and we couldnt make ANY noise once he was asleep. So its a little more expensive for us because we have to get something that at least has two separate rooms. Keep in mind too, Disney is very stimulating for little eyes and ears so they may wear out faster. Plus side, I believe under 3 years old you dont have to pay for them.
We just did a week in Tampa with DS (and he just turned 2). We really could only do one major thing per day so we'd either get going in the morning and then go until he needed a nap (he wont nap in his stroller with everything going on around him) and then in the afternoon we'd just hang out at the hotel pool. Or we'd do the pool in the morning and go out after his nap. Even at 2 years old a week was about all he could handle.

With DS we had our first weekend trip around 6 weeks, we still haven't taken any trips longer than a few days (although I would if I could!). When #2 arrives we might try and take a week or two vacation to visit family while I'm on maternity leave - probably when #2 is around 6 weeks again - time will tell if that actually happens.
We had friends visit us with a 7-week-old. He did fine on the plane. However, we live at high elevation, and he was a bit fussy. But, it could have just been the change in environment.
We'll take our child to our home town to see my grandmother who has ALS as soon as the doc clears us. It will probably be around 6-7 weeks, then. And, we'll fly.
Unless I count my family's cottage on a lake, I'd rather not take our kid on any major trips until they're in elementary school--especially ones that involve getting on a plane. Besides, we're not big road-trippers, or campers or anything like that. If we're going to take them on a trip, I want our kid to remember it.
I would actually like to travel a lot with our kids, domestically and internationally, when they get to an appropriate age.
I'm due october 22 and I'm going to visit family 8 hours away for thanksgiving. So the baby will be about a month old. I'm kinda hoping the baby will be a little early so the baby will be at least 6-7 weeks old before we go but we will see what happens.
We will visit my family fairly often during the first three months (2-hour drive, so no big deal).
Our first big trip will be to spend Christmas w/ my husband's parents when LO is about 3 months old. It's a 7-8 hour drive with no baby and perfect weather. I suspect it will be more like 10-12 with a baby and realistic December weather.
Depends on where we're going, mode of transportation, what kind of traveler DD#2 is, etc.
DD#1 was Screamy McPukerson in the car. We also battled colic from 2-4months. A long car trip would have killed us all until we got over that hump. And I wouldn't fly before 6wks.
Disney makes me laugh! Even at dd's age I would dread taking her to disney. However I think the first 5 months or so would be easy to travel with a lo because they sleep most of the time. I would go for the low key weekend!
we've gone twice now. The first trip was a "free" one, as my aunts gave us their time share for the week. We went with my family and it was an absolute joy! This past Feb. we decided to take DD again just to get out of the cold. She was still free to get in the parks and we wanted an easy, and inexensive vacation (DH and I had just gone to Mexico for the week alone) It was another wonderful trip. I am not sure why you would dread it...
My mom took me to Disney World when I was 6mos old.. so she wants to take me, dh, and Tristan to Disney Land in December. Tristan will only be 4-5 months old when we go. But it's something she really wants to do . He can't enjoy it, but we can lol. Plus we can get cute pics with Mickey :P

We had similar feelings before having DS. We just took him to Tampa for a week and I think its great getting them used to flying at a younger age. Also there is NOTHING better than seeing your kid have SO much fun!!! There were so many age appropriate things for him to do and see, it was wonderful!!! The way I see it, once they get into school are homework starts becoming more serious you are limited more to taking vacation when schools have vacations, and any major vacation areas are going to be packed that time of year!

We are going on a mini vacation when baby is only about 3 weeks. My inlaws rent a house for a few weeks in the San Juan Islands every year and we will be going up for a few days to join them. It's only about a 3 hour car ride and a quick ferry trip for to get there, so nothing that will be too much for her or for us. Plus, once we get there all the family will be around and it will be the first time for most of them to meet her (Not everybody will be staying with us...that would be too overwhelming).
We won't fly with Kate until she has been vaccinated at 6 weeks.
We will be heading to New Orleans for a Sip and See when she is between 5-8 weeks but driving there.
I'll be flying wtih LO right after her vaccinations as well for the exact same reason. This is will DH's and my first year not coming home for Christmas, so I'm taking her home to meet family and friends around mid-October.

IMO, traveling with an infant is MUCH easier than traveling with a toddler. I took DD to Florida when she was 2-3 months old and she did great and was easy. Taking her now is more fun because she can play in the sand and what not, but traveling itself is much more difficult.
I would NOT go to Disney if I could get away. You will have plenty of opportunities to do so when your child can actually enjoy the rides. Unless you guys want to go for yourself. I dont think a child can truly enjoy a place like Disney until they are AT LEAST 3. Heck, they cant even get onto any of the rides.
I would say if you want a relaxing weekend, why bring your baby? If you have to bring baby, at least do something relaxing like the beach or something.
I think the first trip we took was when DD was 4 weeks old. It was a 7 hour road trip for my best friends wedding that I was standing up in. In between then at 10 months, I can't remember. But at 10 months we went and traveled Europe for 4 weeks. She did great
My aunt and uncle have rented a beach house for a week and invited the family to come down for the week or as much of the week as we can. As long as LO doesn't come via c-section and isn't more than a week late we are going to go. She will be 3-4 weeks. We will be driving about 4 hours to get there.
Re: Vacationing with baby
when are you going?
Im not sure we have not discussed this.
We took DD home at 6 weeks to visit my family, first trip to England was when she was 1.
DS went to England with us at 7 weeks.
The younger they are, the easier it is IMO. We are going again this summer to the ILs and I DREAD 2 toddlers on the flight.
We won't fly with Kate until she has been vaccinated at 6 weeks.

We'll see how it goes though.

We've discussed going up to Illinois around Christmas (he/she will be about 9 weeks or so) but I really don't see that happening.
I know we're going to Illinois in May for a family wedding. So LO will be 7 monrhs.

Check with your doc first.

I'm flying to Texas (from NY) at the end of October for my moms 60th birthday.
Trips are easy when they are tiny, its as they get older and more mobile it gets harder.

Baby Name Popularity by State
Beach trips will be probably after the baby is born my SIL lives up there and we visit all the time.
Disneyland we talked about this and said around 3-4 years old that way the LO could enjoy it. That's about when my parents took me.

We went on a weekend trip for a wedding when DS was about 8 weeks. It was very low key and we didn't really do much other than wedding festivities.
We went on a week long vacation when DS was 9 months and stayed at a resort. Again very low key, but super relaxing.
I wouldn't do Disney until DS was older, but there are many people on 12-24 who have.
