homocysteine levels

Has anyone had their homocysteine levels checked and, if they were abnormal, what protocal did your doctor put you on?

My RE ordered the MTHFR test and once she got the results back ordered the homocysteine test (she didn't tell me the results of the MTHFR test). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Re: homocysteine levels

  • My homocysteine levels were tested but were normal, plus I'm only heterozygous for MTHFR so I don't do much - I take extra folic acid to be safe. My larger issue is being homozygous for Factor V Leiden. For that, I took 40mg of Lovenox once a day while stimming and very early in pg. My peri upped my dosage to 50 mg 2x per day. I'll be on that until about 33w then I'll switch to Heparin. I'll be on some type of blood thinner until at least 8 wks pp.

  • mine were checked at the same time as the MTHFR.

Elevated homocysteine levels can lead to increased risk of cardio and neurovascular diseases later in life. Fortunately, the treatment for elevated homocysteine levels is high dose folic acid which is also the treatment for homozygous MTHFR (which is what I have).

Thankfully, my levels were normal, and I plan to keep them there.

  • Thank you for the responses. My sister was on lovenox throughout her pregnancy but she couldn't remember her diagnosis (other than blood clotting). I guess I will just wait to get the results back and go from there.

    Thanks again!
