2nd Trimester

What do you take for heartburn?

I have never had heartburn in my life so I have never taken TUMS or anything like that.  With this pregnancy, I have been getting heartburn almost everyday and it's getting to the point that I need to take something.  I know that TUMS are safe to take during pregnancy.  Does anyone take anything other than TUMS or feel that another medication works a little better?

Re: What do you take for heartburn?

  • I have only taken TUMS, they work fine for me. Plus they have added calcium. :)
  • My OB approved me taking a daily Prilosec. I haven't even needed Tums or Rolaids, but I know those are acceptable remedies as well.

  • Zantac is stronger and will work well if you need it.

I'm on Rx meds due to a pre-existing condition.

  • TUMS!!! and lots of them....I get the generic brand and they work wonders, not to mention a little extra calcium for you!
  • Tums for short term relief--the name brand berry-flavored taste the best (the generic is too chalky for me).  Milk helps, as well.  For longer term relief I take Zantac 75 but I'm going to talk to my doctor tomorrow about taking something stronger.
  • Tums.  If they don't do the trick, a zantac.  My OB doesn't want me taking more than 3 tums a day, though.  If I exceed that, I'm supposed to go to zantac.  Too much excess calcium can cause kidney stones, I guess.

  • Peppermint Tums. Each one has 20% Ca in it too!!

  • I was taking tums until a friend of mine told me that a stick of celery takes it right away and it worked!  Hope you get relief !
  • For instant relief, one tablespoon of baking soda washed down with warm water. For my last pregnancy this worked much better than Tums or Rolaids ever did
  • Zantac150 twice a day plus Tums as needed.  And it still doesn't work... but it helps. Doc also prescribed me Reglan but I haven't taken it yet.

I was taking Tums, but it wasn't helping enough. My doctor gave the ok to Zantac and it has worked wonders so far.

This.  I just talked to the nurse today regarding it and she recommended Zantac.  I'll be picking some up after work tonight.

  • Dr. prescribed Previcid..it got sooo much better, so now I take Mylanta in between meals and Tums when needed. Good Luck, i know it's very painful.

  • Watch your Tums intake, especially if you drink soda. Too many can cause kidney stones and you def don't want kidney stones while you're pregnant.

I take a Zantac if I need it or the occasional Tums.

  • I haven't needed to take anything yet (I've only had mild heartburn, and very rarely). But my doctor said the only med I can really take is Zantac because of my history with kidney stones. The other meds (tums, rolaids) can lead to kidney stones so she says Zantac is the best bet for me. (especially since if I get a stone during pregnancy, there isn't much they can do for me!)

  • I've been having problems with acid reflux disease for years and pregnancy has only made it worse. I use Gaviscon and it works wonders.
