I read so many posts on this and in the end I think it's just really individual. I mostly wore the hospital stuff but I was really glad I had a sweatsuit thing with a zip top. I could wear even just the top in bed and look normal. Oh, and I would bring nursing tanks at first and not worry about nursing bras until later (but I don't have huge boobs). Toiletries, comfy socks. Definitely camera, video cam, outfit for baby to go home in. Baby book?? People say to bring it but we never used ours. Might be nice to have visitors sign in or something. They gave us a special piece of paper w/ DD's footprints that we could insert in any baby book.
If you are planning on nursing, and have a hand pump, I would bring that. Not the whole nursing bag, just enough for a bottle. My milk came in on the second day, when DS had his circumscision(sp?), and he had little interest in me, just sleeping. So I leaked like crazy, very embarassing. Ditto on the nursing tank, much more comfortable then a bra then. Good luck!!

I packed a ton of stuff the first time, here are the things I actually needed and used:
Boppy
Socks/slippers
Cell phone
Laptop
Camera
Toiletries
Outfit for me to wear home
Outfit for DD to wear home
I brought books that I never had time to read; we had constant visitors with my parents being there a lot so between that, feeding DD, and sleeping, I never bothered. I wore the hospital gown and their mesh panties the entire time and just unbuttoned the shoulder of the gown when it was time to nurse; I didn't have a huge milk supply so leaking wasn't a big problem for me and I didn't wear any nursing tanks or anything till I left. We brought a CD player and music but my labor went pretty fast and there was no time to set it up, and we didn't bother afterwards.
We brought tons of other stuff - magazines, clothes, baby stuff we didn't need, snacks - but we hardly ended up using any of it.

I agree with all the advice you already got! Couple things I would add...I got cute, loose drawstring PJs from Target that I wore as lounge clothes pretty much the whole time I was in the hospital and after. Comfy to sleep in but ok if I had guests. I agree, stick with their gowns and disposable panties as long as you can, I bled A LOT after and had no worries in their stuff. Also, people mentioned a coming home outfit but lots of hospitals also do newborn pics. So it can be the same outfit of course but just something to keep in mind, you might want something special for the pics.
Definitely something with internet access; otherwise, you will be staring either at the baby or your hubbie using his i-phone the whole time! My husband actually did most of the packing for us and I think he overpacked. We were only there less than 48 hours. I used my toothbrush, hair brush, flip flops, robe, lap top, birth ball, watch, and boom box (for relaxation music). My take home outfit was too small. I ended up wearing a maternity outfit home, because I actually gained weight due to the IV line.
