Hi all,
I'm not sure if I should be worried or not! I was born with a tiny hernia above my bellybutton and it never caused me any trouble. I'm at 18 weeks now and my hernia is growing almost as fast as my belly. It's about the size of a golf ball now and has started to be a little painful. Obviously I need to bring this up to my doctor, but has anyone had an experience like this? What's going to happen when I go into labor? I'm worried about what all the pushing is going to do to it and will it cause problems for my baby? Ideas or advice?
Re: Hernia Help?
I got a hernia after my c-section last time- I just didn't heal right and ended up with the hernia. When I got pregnant again, the doctor said we'd have to see if the mesh they put in to hold it together would stay in place or if I would end up with another hernia. So far it's held although I definitely feel like it's stretching and wonder how much longer it will.
My doctor said if it did rupture, they wouldn't be able to do anything until the baby was born.
The hernia is part of the reason my doctor wouldn't let me try for a VBAC. I'm guessing if you do have a hernia, your doctor won't let you have a vaginal birth and will opt for the c-section- but obviously you should talk to your doctor.
The best thing for a hernia by the way is to lie on your back and let gravity pull your intestines back in. However, it's not the best thing when you're pregnant so it's a tough bind to be in- I would only lie on my back if the pain gets really bad.
Good luck- I hope your hernia doesn't get too much more painful!
