BFing moms of babies with teeth

Is your LO's latch changing? Lately, I've been experiencing some pain when he nurses, and I think it's because he doesn't know how to suck without using his teeth. He's not biting (well, he does that sometimes, but he stops when I say "ouch!"), so I don't want to make him stop nursing, but it really hurts! I'd love any tips from anyone who has been through this and figured it out! :)

Also, he has 3 teeth (the 2 bottom ones and 1 upper middle, with the other upper middle one coming in).

  • hmm i don't know about the latch changing, but DD does bite sometimes at the end of a nursing session. i just say ow really loud and then she comes off and smiles at me...little stinker. if she doesn't come off then i unlatch her and try again in a few minutes. sorry i'm not much help. these teeth are so tricky!
  • Yes, but only on one side. Weird right?! It is soooo painful when she nurses on the right side but like you said, it isn't biting. I'm not sure what to do about it, or if there is anything I can do really. I just try to focus on why I am still bf'ing and how much I want to get to 1y whenever she nurses on that side. The benefit outweighs the pain, the benefit outweighs the pain . . . owwie!!

This is what I do too! I had terrible pain the first 6 weeks, so I thought I was past that, but maybe not. I might have to break out the old Lansinoh bottle.

  • Yes!  His tooth on the top pokes me and it hurts.  I've tried to re-latch but it doesn't make a difference.
  • Yes thats happening to me too. His latch is getting a little lazy and he scrapes my nipple with his teeth -ouch. It doesnt hurt bad enough for me to stop nursing and he doesnt bite me so thats awesome. Maybe try to use some lasinoh on them to help soothe after nursing? Try pulling him off and getting him to latch like we did in the beggining - waiting for him to open his mouth really wide, ykwim? Maybe it might help. Or check out a LLL meeting? They might have some tips.

  • i feel like he sucks harder now and also kinda nibbles or something. i pull him off and say no if it gets intense, then let him relatch and it's usually fina after that.
  • DS's latch is the same. Besides him biting me twice, I haven't really noticed a difference now that he's got teeth(all 4 middle teeth).
  • Right now she only has her two bottom teeth which stay covered by her tongue.  However, as she starts getting full, she will bite down and start pulling her head back.  I do bottle feed more often now...
