heating pad ok?

My lower back is really sore today and I'd love to go curl up in bed with my heating pad, but I know I've heard that heating pads are not ok during pregnancy, at least in the first trimester.  I did some googling and most resources I found seem to suggest that it is ok, but I was wondering for those of you who have already had doctor's appointments whether the doc said anything about heating pads and whether they are safe.  Thanks in advance ladies!

  • My doc told me at my yearly physical before I got my BPF that I should avoid heat (hot tubs, sauna, heating pads, electric blankets etc) while TTC and during pregnancy since there was a new study out that showed birth defects increased with heat. I would say NO... it's not worth it. Think about it, your baby is in the middle of your body, why would you think your back is safer than your stomach?

  • hmmm... well, since the part of my back that hurts is my lower back and that is just the other side of my abdomen, I guess I'll play it safe and avoid the heating pad for now. : (

    Thanks ladies!
