What is the deal with deli meat? I just purchased a 1lb pack of roast beef and I will be very sad if I can no longer eat that. It is one of the only things that does not give me heartburn besides lunchables which is also cold meat.
You will hear most ppl say not to eat it because there is something in it that can cause m/c.
But I also hear doctors say that you can, that the risk is so minimal.
I chose not to eat it during my first trimester, just to be safe but I know a lot of women who eat it and never had any problems. I am sure someone here will post with more detailed info.
The other week I was craving a grilled cheese and turkey sandwich, so I made one and ate it. Some people say to heat it up. Some day don't eat it at all. I'd ask your doctor on his/her opinion. A friend of mine said "legit" lunch meat is okay: like Subway or packaged Hillshire Farms... Who knows really?
My neighbors are doctors and they've both said that the listeria bacteria (which can be found in lunch meat) can be treated very easily, and she said she ate a deli sandwich every day of her pregnancy last year and was fine.
If you're doctor's okay with you eating it, then go for it. Your body is telling you it's hungry for meat!

It has nothing to do with miscarriagems. There's just a risk of listiria (some kind of bacteria) and the chances of getting it is very, very slim
My DR told me not to eat any lunch meat. She said that aside from the meat/listeria risk that the deli slicers are not really cleaned very well so to avoid that whole situation. She suggested that if I really want a sandwich to cook a turkey or a brisket etc and then use that meat for a sandwich. I am thinking of slow cooking a corned beef one day to make some reuben's.
The only thing close to deli meat I've had is a little serrano ham at a Spanish restaurant last night- I couldn't resist. It was delicious.
I really don't think it's too hard to have shredded chicken breast, homemade roast beef, or the occasional tuna sandwich instead of deli meat. I don't think deli meat tastes that great anyway, and the sodium = major bloat.
That's right listeria was the name. I hear a lot of women online say it can lead to early miscarriages. Its funny how you can hear so many different things about a particular issue.
My doc said the same thing, that the chances of anything happening is extremely slim. But I do know other girls who's doc's told them to avoid it at all costs.
Angel - are you from north or south La? I noticed your H is
military...mine is National Guard in the Gonzales area.
We are stationed at Ft, Polk, which is in the Leesville area (west central LA). I don't know where Gonzales is, I do know there were a lot of National Guard in Alexandria. Are you originally from LA? DH and I are from Chicago.
I was really wanting a salami sandwich the other night, so I bought some from the deli at the grocery store. Then, not but a few hours after eating a sandwich, I read in WTEWYE that you should "avoid food perserved with nitrates and nitrites including hot dogs, salami, bologna, and smoked fish and meats (114 or in the Nine Months of Eating Well section). This sucks and now lunch meat too...dang!

I was told you can have deli meat if you heat it until steaming, but that just sounds so gross to me right now.

Everyone is entitled to do what she is most comfortable doing.
I ate a 6 inch turkey sub for dinner last night. Which is probably the 3rd one in a week.
