Can you gate check convertible car seats?

I have to fly with LO in August, she'll be close to a year old, too big for her infant carrier (she hasn't been in it in a month).   Will I be able to gate check her Myride 65?

Re: Can you gate check convertible car seats?

  • Why wouldn't you just check it with the rest of the luggage? I mean, you obviously don't plan to use it on the plane, and I don't see much use in a giant car seat while waiting around the airport ...

    Maybe I'm missing something. :s

  • Why would you want to haul it all the way out to the gate unless you were trying to see if you could get an extra seat on the plane? I'd check it at the counter, it's free there too.

  • yes, you can.

To pp, you might want it at the gate for a few reasons: if they have a free seat and you have the car seat with you, they have to give you the seat! Also, less of a chance of it getting lost. And some people feel safer not having their car seat thrown around w/ other luggage (they can certainly be rough w/ luggage!).

ETA: and if you have the traveling toddler accessory, you can use the car seat as a stroller attached to your carry on suitcase.

All that said, I've always bought DD a seat so it hasn't been an issue. Don't know what we'll do now that DD1 won't be sitting in her car seat on the plane... haven't had to deal with that yet ;)

Would you really trust those baggage handlers with your child's car seat?  I've seen the way my baggage comes back, there is no way I would allow them to throw around my child's seat!  At least if it is gate checked it is the last thing on the plane and it is somewhat taken care of!

OP we use this!  It is so easy keeps it protected and I have flown alone with with her convertible and is actually pretty comfortable!  I put extra diapers for the layover and toys in it too!

  • Thanks for the replies!  I have flown with her before, in her infant carrier, and I gate checked it.  I feel safer knowing that it's not being tossed around with all the luggage, I have a horrible fear that it would get cracked or spilled on.  Plus, now that I know that I "could" possibly get a seat, it makes it all the more worth it  :)
