Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone have a 6 month old who doesn't eat solids yet?

DD will be 6 months on Wednesday, so I apologize for jumping ship early but thought I'd get more answers over here.

We were given the okay to start solids at 4 months but DD didn't seem ready so we tried around 5 months.  First we tried rice cereal, then cereal with bananas, then green beans with no cereal, then apples with no cereal.  All purees, of course.  She's never been interested.  Those were all spaced out and she never ate more than a few bites.  She gagged a LOT.  The last time we attempted was last week with the apples.

This is new to me, I've never dealt with anything like it before.  DS was on cereal at 3 1/2 months because he was drinking way too much formula and he jumped right at the solids, there was never even a "learning curve" or anything.

So what gives?  Is it that she's just not ready yet, or is she just an extra gaggy baby?  It just makes me so confused!

  • We just started at 6 months and he had no interest. For like, a month and a half. Last week, I sent some food to day care and he ate solids 3 of the 4 days. I tried this weekend and he snubbed me again, except to slurp some mashed banana off my fingers. He does like puffs, though. I think some kids are just on their own schedule.

  • Thank you! That definitely makes me feel better. I don't want to rush her if she isn't ready. She's happy and healthy and gainig weight so I'll stop worrying!

  • We tried solids for the first time yesterday and he was totally not into it.  His pedi says all he needs for the first year is BM so no biggie if solids don't work out.  We'll try from time to time but I'm not worried that he didn't go for it right away.

  • We just started when DD was 6 months and she's just now getting the hang of things. We started with rice cereal and she hated it, she gagged a lot with that, and would push it right back out of her mouth. After about 4-5 days of that we decided to try oatmeal cereal instead and she did much better with that. After about 2 days of not really knowing what to do, last week she just started eating it. She now opens her mouth when I put the spoon close and the last few days she's eaten 1.5tbsp!! Today we tried sweet potato for the first time and she liked it! She made a couple faces in the beginning trying to figure out what it was but she ate about 1/4 of the jar... not bad for her first veggie!!

We just kept trying, I think that's all you can do really. Some babies take to it right away and others take some time. I'm sure she'll get it eventually, just takes time! GL!!

  • We went through the exact same thing you're describing.  All he would do was gag or shut his mouth so we couldn't get it in there in the first place. At his 6 month pedit appointment, it was still a no-go.  She said to keep trying but that some kids just never accept purees and we could start finger foods at 7-8 months.  She said it was fine.

Then, a week ago, it just suddenly clicked.  He loves it now.  He will take about 1/2 container of Stage 1 foods every day.  There is hope!!

  • Both my kids started at 6 months.  DD would eat right away, but we didn't add a second meal until she started to enjoy it at 7.5 months.  DS had zero interest at 6 months, started putting things in his mouth at 7.5 months and was eating with vigor at 9 months.

Let her lead the way!  It is all for practice right now and there is no hurry.

  • It took DS about 2 months to really be interested in solids.  From 6-8 months he would eat at most 1oz, usually less.  I tried everyday, but if he wasn't into it I didn't push it.

  • We tried solids for the first time last week. We attempted squash for a few days and he just wasn't into it (see siggy pic). We're taking a break for a couple days a will try again with a different food. Anyways, you're not the only one whose baby isn't digging it.

  • We started around 6 months and 3 weeks and it took my DD a good 3 weeks after that to really get the hang of it. She is still just on purees.
