2nd Trimester

When were you able to distinguish body parts?

I am almost 21 weeks and have been feeling kicks since 17.5 weeks.  However, I have no clue what the baby's position is - and her kicks (I guess they could really be punches, head butts, etc) are starting to change positions.

When were you able to distinguish where the baby's head, butt, foot, etc were?

Re: When were you able to distinguish body parts?

  • This is an excellent question!
  • I still can't. I can feel that there is a difference, but I can't identify the body part.

  • I don't remember.  Maybe try asking 3rd tri too.
  • When they start poking them "out" and even then it's still a guessing game.  I'm thinking it's closer to 30 weeks?  I can't remember exactly, but that's my favorite part of pregnancy, when you start to feel little feet and elbows and such making a bump in your belly, and you rub them to get them to pull them back in (because it can get uncomfortable.)

  • I could never figure it out w/ DS. He was breech until around 35/36 weeks.  So, I could generally guess what might be hands or feet.  The best was feeling something round and hard that would push up on me.  I never knew if it was his little head or his butt!!

Ok - I'm glad to hear that it is normal to have no clue!

I have just been reading posts about people know early (someone said they could tell at 17 weeks - I gave that statement the side eye for sure) and was starting to think I was either stupid or something was wrong!

  • I could identify her butt at around 22-23 weeks or so.  She's always really enjoyed sticking it out and it's very distinctive--too pointy to be a head, too large to be an elbow or knee.  To date it is the body part that is most easily identifiable, although at around 28 weeks or so I started to feel other parts.  I don't think I've ever identified her head but I can tell feet, hands, elbows, knees, etc.  Also back, which is pretty easy.
  • I can, but I wasn't able to with ds until late 3rd tri.

A couple things I know, pointy is elbow/knee/etc.  If it's really hard and doesn't really move when you push on it, it's probably a butt.  :)  And if it's large and hard and moves when you push on it (like moves down and then floats back up when you let up, kinda like a bobble!  lol) it's the head.  :)

    hth!

I agree. I found it hard to believe too.

  • it wasn't until I was around 30 weeks + that I could figure it out - and by that time, I was having weekly ultrasounds and knew her position.
  • I felt a definite foot for the first time last night!!  It was one hard little spot pushing and pushing...so i pushed back a little and he kicked back Stick out tongue
  • I'm in my 29th to 30th week and I still have no idea.  I can guess sometimes based on her position from the 3D ultrasound, but it's really just a guess.

Agreed, I think this is the same as knowing "for sure" that it's a boy/girl.  You're just guessing really, but there are only so many options.

I have no idea what is a foot vs. an elbow, I think it would be a little creepy to be able to tell.

  • Just this weekend I felt separate arms and legs but I couldn't tell which was which. I can tell when she changes position sometimes. Saturday night she was kicking me directly in the bladder and then lastnight her feet here up by my bellybutton. DH got to feel her kick then.

  • Good question. I haven't been able to distinguish body parts yet and unless I see a foot or something, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to. I have felt the baby kind of lodged by my ribs which is uncomfortable and then I just push her out of the way :)
  • def not that early.  Not until at least 30-32 weeks
  • I have no clue! I just guess based on the location and strength of the feeling.

THIS- I get a kick out of those who have so much movement at 8-9 weeks...uhm really?

  • I couldn't tell with either of my boys.  I would think this big massive "hard" part had to be their head...and my DR or CNM would say, oh no...that's their butt, back, or some other body part

  • It's still sometimes hard to tell.  I have an anterior placenta though.  I can usually tell the bum though because it's big and round.  I would say I could start taking educated guesses around 30 weeks.

    Same for me.

  • I'm 19 weeks and I get head/butt and hand/foot too; all my guesses about which one it is each time come from my knowledge of the baby's position from the ultrasound.
  • I still can't... she's really active and sometimes i think, "well that was round so it's probably an elbow or knee." but I really have no clue yet... I can't wait for it though, I never know how she's positioned in there, and would really like to!

  • Even towards the end with DD1 I couldn't tell, sometimes but rarely. I foot could be an elbow, and head could be a butt, there is really just no exact way of knowing.
  • Last time around, even in the end, I was only able to distinguish head/butt vs. a limb but never more than that. . . maybe I needed to pay more attention. IDK. :)

If this is who I'm thinking of all her posts are like that, she sure knows a lot about everything for it being her first. Confused

  • I honestly never really knew with DS unless it was after an ultrasound and I knew which way he had been laying. After 32 weeks, I could tell when it was his butt or his head, sometimes his feet, bot otherwise I had no clue other than knowing he was flipping over or kicking. It's fun to watch at any rate, and I was a "fetus tormenter" that used to poke to get him to move. Hey, it's uncomfortable to have a butt sticking straight out of your belly and a foot in your ribcage! LOL

Ditto. I don't think happens until pretty late.
