Starting solids and refusing formula? Help!

We started solids at 6 months, and he has not really liked anything till this weekend (sweet potatoes).

He usually drinks about 20 oz of 22cal Neocate (I know this is low but his pedi and specialists are ok with it) but this weekend he is refusing bottles or only eating a couple ounces for a total of about 10-12 a day. If you offer the sweet potatoes after the refused bottle he will still eat them but will not eat the bottle...

Any ideas? Wondering if we should get rid of solids for a while? Or if maybe it is unrelated (ie teething)? Any thoughts/suggestions would be great!  I am more concerned about him getting the nutrients he needs than eating solids

Re: Starting solids and refusing formula? Help!

  • I have two thoughts.

1-Ds went through times like this where he would hardly drink anything (10 oz) a day if I was lucky. Needless to say I freaked out but after a few days he started drinking formula again. During this time I just made sure he ate more solids so he was getting some fluid and food and just watch to make sure he was still having a good amount of wet diapers.

2-Ds also did this when he was not feel well. When he has an ear infection he hated sucking on his bottle because it hurt.

    Hope things turn around.

  • My DD is on Neocate as well.  She is also a VERY small eater.  She used to take about 25 ounces per day.  When we started solids (4 months) it dropped to around 18-20 ounces per day.  My pedi said he was OK with her decrease as long as it did not drop below 16 ounces per day.  In addition he suggested mixing formula with all her solid meals.  For breakfast she has 1 tablespoon of cereal with 1/2 ounce formula and 1/2 fruit.  For lunch she has a veggie, no formula, and dinner she has either a mashed up veggie or fruit with cereal and another 1/2 an ounce of formula.

I know how frustrating it is when your LO won't eat.  I am in this situtation almost every day.  I do what I can and as long as the pedi is not concerned I am not going to drive myself crazy.

    Good luck!

Thanks maybe he was just out of sorts this weekend, he has never dropped this low before.

Can I say it is nice to know that I am not the only one?  I am going to monitor it for a couple days then call his pedi.  Two questions: 1) Is the formula/rice/solid mixture very runny? I am thinking that might be an option.  2) Have you tried Neocate Nutra?  I saw it on the website and wonder if that would be good for mixing.
