Baby food questions - making your own

So I have been giving LO jarred baby food but my supply is running low and I want to make some of my own. I'm looking at wholesomebabyfood.com but wanted some opinions on your experiences. Do any of you have any experience with pureeing strawberries, blueberries or mangos? LO loves some of the jarred foods that contain these and I was wondering how well they puree and freeze. Should I make mixtures and freeze them or just leave separate so I can put cubes of different fruits together to make impromptu mixtures?

Re: Baby food questions - making your own

  • Fresh strawberries are not recommended until they are a year old. In the jarred baby food they have gone through a process that makes them safer. I would hold off for a bit on those.

Most fruits aside from apples, pears etc are easy to mash up with a fork and you dont have to worry about pureeing and freezing. Apples and pears need to be steamed a bit to make them softer.

  • mixtures work fine frozen. I've had problems freezing bananas. Just be careful with strawberries - even if LO has had them jarred, it doesn't mean LO won't have an allergic reaction to them... something about the way it is processed at a higher heat in baby food companies... it is suggested to wait on strawberries, raspberries, blackberries until 1 year. Blueberries are fine (different "family") GL!

  • I pretty much steam, puree and freeze everything. I haven't done strawberries or blueberries yet, but the mangoes worked fine.

  • I haven't done strawberries because they aren't recommended unde a year (I guess the pre-packaged must somehow be safe, but IDK how).  The blueberries puree and freeze really well though!  They are one of DS's favorites. :)

  • Blueberries I puree and add to yogurt. Now he eats them whole as finger food too. Mango I have in frozen chunks and add to a mesh teether as sort of a popsicle. Strawberries - not until a year.

Did you steam the mangos or just puree them as is? I'm guessing it depends on how ripe they are. I just noticed my store has them on sale so I thought I would try them.

    I just did mango :)

It's so easy. I would leave them separate so you can do your own mixing.

  • LO has had strawberries (fresh) already without a problem. In my understanding of everything I have read, they are saying not until after a year if there is a family history of allergies. We don't have any allergies in our family.

  • I did a apple-blueberry-mango blend this morning.  YUM!  I steamed the apple to soften it.  I keep my blueberries and mango frozen and just thaw a few chunks of each as needed, then puree.

  • I steam frozen blueberries and mangos and then puree them and freeze them without problems! Not doing strawberries until after 1 yr.
