Repost from skinnursemandee....
Sun exposure is a rather sensitive subject for me as both my parents have been suffering HORRIBLE bouts of skin cancer and have had chunks of skin carved out of their faces.
Please check out this PSA from one of our fellow bumpies...
Re: Sunscreen PSA must read!
same with us. and I was thinking about when I was a kid. My parents covered us in the Water babies stuff. They had no idea that it was bad for us. They thought they were doing a good thing by getting the highest SPF and reapplying really often.
This was good info, thanks for linking. My mom has skin cancer and is dealing with treatment now. And at age 27, I had basal cell carcinoma on my chest! Not exactly scary since it can't metastasize (sp?) like melanoma, but still a good wakeup call and painful to have removed.
Because of my personal experiences w/ skin cancer I am very careful about sun protection for DS. In addition to the appropriate sunblock, he will always have a shirt and wide-brimmed hat on outside, at all times. Even when he's swimming in our pool. I got him one of those UV protectant swim shirts. Most of damaging sun exposure is obviously on the face and chest, so those are the areas to be extra vigilant about protecting. He is already starting to fight me on the hat
, but I deal with the tantrums... no playing outside in the sun without a brimmed hat, end of story.
