so i got my bfp last wed. i saw my dr the very next day but we really just talked. she said my next appt would be when im at 12 wks. i said ok because i didnt know any better. but now looking around on these boards, i see that a lot of other women are getting their "first real" appts around 8, 9 or 10 wks. is my dr crazy or do some drs do this diffferently than others??
AND my drs office is quite small. i didnt ask but i dont think that 12 wk appt will be an u/s although i would really like one just to make sure everything is ok. and im not sure if ill be listening to the heart either. i like my dr, its just...im not sure how thorough she is. or am i being a worry wart?? this is my first pregnancy and im terrified of all the things that can go wrong....
Re: drs appts
I had my first appointment at 5ish weeks because I have a heart condition. They did the blood work, exam, etc. I didn't have an u/s though. I have my first u/s on Tuesday, and I'll be 8 weeks.
You could always call and ask to have your appointment pushed up? Ask for an appointment around 8 or 9 weeks and see where it gets you. If your doctor refuses, and that makes you unhappy, then perhaps start researching other OBs in your insurance network. You shouldn't have to be unhappy with your choice. Remember, you're going to be dealing with this person for the next 10 months, so you want to start off on the right foot now!
At 12 weeks it's likely the doctor will try to find the h/b with doppler.
My doc sees patients around 8 weeks for a dating u/s but many many women only get one u/s and it's not until 20 weeks.
Many of the earlier appointments/u/s are because the women here have been under the care of an RE for IF or have previous pg losses so their doctors follow them very closely.
In a normal pg, it is completely usual to not be seen until 12 weeks and to only get one u/s at 20 weeks.
Also, by 10- 12 weeks you should be able to hear a h/b on a doppler yourself if you are interested in renting/purchasing one. I've heard good things about the Sonoline B.

PS. Don't sit around and worry about all the things that could go wrong. Stay away from Google and only read the baby books when you're "in the right mind." Take a Bump break every couple of days so you have a life outside of your pregnancy. Don't listen to random people's stories about all the horrors of pregnancy.
I have a co-worker who won't shut the F up about being KU. She's a week or two ahead of me. At a function on Friday night, I walked up to say "hi," and the first thing she asked me was about baby names. She literally has nothing else to talk about but her fetus, and people at work are starting to notice and comment. Be happy with your condition, but don't make it your only interest or you will drive yourself (and everyone around you) crazy.
thanks for all the replies...i think ill call the drs office and see what the 12 wk appt will be for. and ill discuss this with my husband and see if he wants to choose a different dr.
wow jennlynn, are you in my house spying on me??!! haha im on the bump all the time and on google researching everything about pregnancies! im so terrified and someone should really take the computer away from me! i wanted to purchase the book "what to expect when your expecting" but ive heard it can make you worry.
im stressed out about bad things because ive only been off bcp since january. and ive read that pregnancies right after bcp are at a higher risk for miscarriages. something about the lining of your uterus hasnt had time to thicken up again? i asked my dr about that and she said theres no real research to prove that point. but ill worry about m/c until the day i hear my babys heartbeat. ughhh worrying is nooooot good for the baby!
if you want the NT scan, it must be done before 12w 6d, i would call and see if they could change your appointment 2 weeks earlier.
personally, i wouldn't be OK with seeing my OB at 4w and then not seeing him until 2 months later/8 weeks later, so i would call and make an earlier appointment around 10 weeks.
your post made me feel a little bit better, thank you! are you doing anything special to try to stay positive? or just trying to stay busy to not think about bad things?? im driving myself absolutely crazy! i have to pee a lot during the day and everytime i (TMI?) pull my pants down, im terrified ill see blood.
omg girl!! you are not alone! my DH thinks I'm bananas because every time I come out of the bathroom I do a "still no blood!" dance!! hahaha. especially because I've been having mild cramping on and off and virtually no other symptoms. anyway I'm starting a pregnancy journal today (I just wrote a post about it LOL) and I think that will help me channel a lot of my thoughts and fears in a positive way... it's extra hard because we aren't telling our families/friends (only, like 2 of our friends know) until we hear that heartbeat! DH is soo impatient he just wants to tell everyone but I keep reminding him we have no idea what's going on inside there
as for me I'm just doing my best to avoid "pregnancy no-no's" (caffeine is the hardest!! AGH!) as much as possible and eat healthy.. it's kinda all I can do right now.. just know that I'm already taking care of this baby the best way I can and that's all I can do. hope this helps a little.. at least we're in the waiting boat together lol! and I know there have been at least a few other ladies on here who have to wait a while for their first appt, too so we aren't alone!
I *believe* she meant 13w6d... at least that's what I've heard.
GL... I will be going crazy waiting right along with you!
