Moms who did CIO or Ferber.. any tips for surviving the cries?

We are (re)doing Ferber tonight, any tips for surviving the cries?  I know it is what is best for him right now - he needs to learn how to sleep on his own (after a month of being sick and teething).. but do you have any tips?

If you are anti-CIO please don't flame this post - I respect your position, please respect mine.

  • Well, the progressive waiting really helped because we knew we could go in and be sure she was OK at some point. In the meantime, we turned the monitor off and had a conversation about something other than the crying baby--plans for the weekend, work, etc. It really helped to distract us. Good luck!

  • I cleaned like a mad woman! It kept me busy and focused on something. It was hard, but it WORKED! After just a few nights (like 3-4) we were able to feed DS at 9:00 and lay him in his crib for him to fall asleep on his own. Since then, he has progressively pushed his own bedtime back to about 7:30ish. Now, at almost 13 months...I notice him starting to test some bedtime boundaries, but I just stick with our routine. I would ferber again though, if needed. It helped him tremendously.

  • i just keep telling myself that he is over tired and i need to let him go to sleep, and if i keep going in there its only going to prolong the process good luck stay strong!!!

  • My mantra for the first 2 nights (which were the worst) was "She's not sick, and she's not hurt.  I'm doing what is best for her in the long run."

She now sleeps from 7-7 and falls asleep on her own.  She's a much better napper because of it too.  She is soooo much happier, which makes us happier parents.  It isn't for everyone, but it was the right thing for us.  Good luck.

  • i agree with turning the monitor off for a few minutes at a time. i never would've made it through if i left it on the whole time. of course we went on vacation and everything went to crap. i have yet to re-sleep train.
  • What do you do when they wake up in the middle of the night? How do you wean them off the bottle? Do you just let him CIO? Do the ferber again? I have no problem getting him to fall asleep.. it's keeping him asleep.
  • Agree with all of PPs.  Shut the door, turn off the monitor, etc. so that you can still hear, but it is muffled.  Just keep repeating to yourself WHY you're doing this and it is what is BEST for him - and remind yourself that he's not hurt and he's not sick.  He's tired and what he needs is sleep.

  • turn off the baby monitor and jump in the shower.  i found that helped drown out the noise, and if i was feeling guilty i could just stand in there and let myself cry too.

i couldn't go check on her-that made it worse, so if at the end of my shower she was still crying i would go get her for the night.  i think it only happened once or twice though.  most times i would finish my shower and she'd be sound asleep.

good luck!  it sucks, but it's worth the pain imo.

  • - We turned the momitor down and just watched the lights.
    - Had DH be the one to do the check-ins since mommy = food and old habits
    - Watched tv and talked about anything else
    - Kept telling ourselves that this was good for him to learn to sleep on his own and that it was ok!

    Good luck!
