infant car seats - scam or lifesaver?

I know I have plenty of time, but I have plenty to think about!

Do you think that infant carseats are a way to trick new moms into buying two carseats for their children? I know they have lots of perks, especially if we are going to be new moms in the winter, and want to put our children into the seat before we venture out into the cold. I am wondering, though, if they are really worth the extra cost, since the convertible ones have an infant insert.

I am torn. What are your thoughts?

  • Lifesaver! Having the ability to take them out of the car without taking them out of the seat and consequently waking them up is a beautiful thing.

  • I agree with Smores. When the little girl I nanny was still an infant it was so handy to be able to go and get some errands done and have her sleep the whole time because I didnt have to take her out of the carseat.

    this!

  • COMPLETELY worth it. Newborns sleep so much, and if they fall asleep in the car or stroller, you can transfer them inside without waking them.

My friend's DD actually slept in her carseat in the house all the time to help her reflux!

Plus the bundle me on top is a godsend for a winter baby! Blankets are too annoying!

  • It really depends on how big your child is. DS was out of his infant seat and into a convertable at 5 months (he also HATED the infant seat and would scream the entire time he was in it). It is nice to be able to tote them around but those things are heavy and with another LO I'll probably use my mei tai or get a moby.

  • I know a lot of hospitals will not let you take your babies home with out one. The one I work at will not!

Really? Even with a good-fitting convertible seat? Some start at 5 pounds.

Ladies, thank you so much for your input! I am still torn, but you have given me much to think about!

  • I've had the same thoughts too. My SIL's baby outgrew his infant seat at around 4-5 months too and all I could think of was wow maybe should've gotten a convertible seat off the bat. ( but that may also have to do with the fact if the car or stroller wasn't moving....he wasn't sleeping)

And even if there is no reflux, it works well for the first cold....it totally helped both of us get sleep those nights!

Agree with the other things said too!
