Anyone have any info about caring for a disabled adult?

My stepdad's sister is disabled, Not sure what she has but she can't speak, can't walk that well, can't feed herself, etc. Well, his whackadoo mother cares for her, thing is, she herself is not 84ish I think. So, when the poor sister falls, mom can't pick her up and stepdad will have to drive an hour to get her off the floor (if a neighbor isn't available)

Well, now his mom is really losing her marbles, seeing people sitting by her when she wakes up and all that goodness so I think Stepdad seriously needs to think about his sisters care when his mom passes. He says he will not put her into a home. My question is, does anyone even offer round the clock care in YOUR home?

Anyone ever been in a situation like this?

  • There are such things as Personal Care Assistants...not sure how much something like that costs.  Does she qualify for services through a state agency?  (in MA it's Dept. of Developmental Disabilities).  The agency I work for runs residential programs which are nice-not like a nursing home...they are regular houses in the community with 1-3 people living there and a Direct Support staff.

  • if she gets medicaid/care she may be able to get a visiting nurse-type thing (I forgot what they're called but they're not actually nurses). My grandfather had one that worked from like 8 to like 6 or so. But for 24-hour care, it may be pricey. Perhaps a group home? But if she can't function, the only other option I can think of is a rehab facility (basically a home for younger people)

  • I have to look into it for him. She's pretty much not capable of anything on her own. She can't bathe herself, feed herself, etc. Ugh.

I assume also when something happens to his mom he becomes her guardian or whatever the term is, right? Since there is no other immediate family.

  • not necessarily. I think it depends on state law. He becomes her next of kin, but unless the mom was her legal guardian and worked something out that passed the guardianship to your SD, she would become a ward of the state because she's an adult. But don't quote me on that.
