no massage?

so i belong to massage envy, which is basically a club membership where i get discounted massages every month (i'm kind of a massage junkie.) anyway, went in this weekend and informed them that i am pregnant, and they said they couldn't massage me until i'm out of my first trimester.

i was so annoyed! i guess i understand they have to limit their own liability, in case something were to happen, but most everywhere i've read says that massage is helpful in pregnancy. also, can't i make my own decision on what i am willing/unwilling to do while i'm pregnant?

anyone ask their doctors about massage?

Re: no massage?

  • I understand completely, my DH and I are going to savannah for our 1st anniversary in a couple of weeks and we wanted to get massages at the hotel spa, I looked it up and it says for 2nd and 3rd trimester only. Angry Not cool!! Obviously if I'm not getting one, then neither is he.

  • I'm a massage junkie as well and it pains me to not be able to have one for 3 months.  On the other hand, if there's a risk for m/c due to massages in the 1st tri, that's not one I'm going to take anyway.

  • My doc told me last time that massage in 1st tri were a no-no.

  • I think thats really strange my massage envy will do them. Do they have certified person there in prenatal massage? If not, I understand why. I asked my doctor and he said it was okay as long as they worked on the legs and arms mostly. no lower back. Also that they needed to use the pillows so you were not putting pressure on the tummy.

  • I got a lot of massages during my first pregnancy and had never heard of a risk during the 1st trimester. I would definitely call your dr and see what he/she says. In my opinion, as long as you have someone trained in prenatal massage and you're comfortable, it s/b fine. If Massage Envy isn't comfortable treating you, you probably shouldn't go, but maybe it's worth a splurge to find someone else until the end of your first tri if your dr clears massage for you.
  • How about accupuncture? I have an appointment for when I will be about 8 weeks.
  • I belong to massage envy too and was wondering about that. I hadn't called yet, but I guess now I know. Come June, I will be pounding on their door!

  • i think it's one of those things - some doctors say it's fine, and others say it's not. they actually have a certified prenatal massage therapist on-hand, they just refuse to actually perform massage AT ALL in the first tri.

it might be just that store. it just bugs me - let ME decide if i want to take the risk. why are you deciding for me? like if i go to subway and they refuse to serve me turkey because i'm pregnant. i get it, they want to limit their own liability. i was just going crazy with hormones and when they turned me away i was so mad!! haha, don't mess with a pregnant woman!
