Insurance question.

Did you have insurance for your LO when s/he was born?

I just got the crap news that my little girl will probably make her arrival early. It could be tomorrow, the next couple of weeks, or the next month. I'm on bedrest right now and am desperately scrambling to try to get insurance together for her before she gets here. What did y'all do?

I'm scared I won't have anything lined up for her if she decides to make her arrival within the next week.

Re: Insurance question.

  • If you have health insurance through your employer, you will use her birth date as your qualifying life event, and coverage for her will be effective that date.  You will just need to submit the appropriate paperwork within 30 days of her birth.

  • We just had to call our insurance when DS was born and they added him.  Also, hopefully you won't need this, but if your DD is born weighing less than 2 pounds 10 ounces (or something like that) then she will qualify for medicaid while in the NICU.  The social worker in the NICU should be able to help you with that.

  • You shouldn't have to get anything done before the birth. As long as you get it done within 30 days after the birth you should be fine. My insurance covered all procedures and doctor checks until I could get my LO signed up. You should be fine, and I wouldn't worry about trying to add early (but you could always call your insurance company and see what they recommend).
  • PPs answered your question, but I wanted to say that I hope you don't have to face this. What is your condition/reason for bedrest? There's lots of support here for those facing early deliveries and fears/concerns that go along with it. Prayers that you'll keep your little girl in for as long as possible!
  • You should be able to have her qualify for LaCHIP, especially if you're on LaMOMS. Keep us posted!
  • If you currently have insurance through your employer, then it is easy to add her after she is born.  I think you have about 30 days after the birth to add a LO.

If you don't have insurance for yourself, let alone the baby, you may want to look into whether or not your hospital is considered a charity hospital.  Many get special funds from the gov't to absorb the cost of healthcare for the uninsured.  Catholic hospitals often
