What CAN'T we eat?

Does anyone have a link to a list of foods we aren't supposed to eat?  Someone I work with had talked about not eating lunch meats?  Is this true?  I am scheduling with my OBGYN on Monday, but just curious...

Re: What CAN'T we eat?

  • I don't have a comprehensive list, but lunch meat is out, because of the risk of listeria. It's a small risk, but a nasty one. Also, hotdogs are out. A bummer with summer coming.

  • This morning, I picked a piece of asparagus right from the ground and ate it. Later, I thought that maybe I should have rinsed it first, what with it coming out of the soil my husband made special with 4 types of compost.

    Oops.

??? Since when are hotdogs out??? This is the first time I've heard that, and I ate them when I was pg with DD. As for lunch meat, if it's warmed up, it would kill any listeria that might be on it...which would be very rare in the first place.

Watch your fish intake - some fish like shark have higher levels of mercury. Fresh water fish is usually fine and you can have tuna occasionally. Albacore tuna usually has more mercury than the Light, so try to stick with that. Also, nothing raw - sushi, raw meats, etc.

There are more, but not a lot, really. Just make sure you're getting plenty of iron, vitamins, and a balance of carbs, protiens, etc. And start munching on some fruit and veggies! =) It's more about eating well than avoiding foods completely (with a few exceptions, of course).

    HTH!

Hot dogs fall under the potential for listeria category too.

Dr Oz also mentions it in YOU Having a Baby.

  • About the cold cut thing, when I was pregnant with DS my OB had said that if it's fresh (like cut then you eat it, not if it's sitting out) it's fine. I used to have turkey occassionally, just when I really wanted it. I'm pretty sure it's probably more for the amount of sodium in it then listeria. Just don't over do it.

  • Here;s the list I got from my OB's office:

?       Thoroughly cook all raw meats and fish.?       Wash raw vegetables thoroughly before eating.?       Keep uncooked meats separate from vegetables and from cooked and ready to eat foods.?       Wash hands, knives, and cutting boards after handling uncooked meats and dairy products.?       Avoid unpasteurized milk or beverages or foods make from raw milk?       Always thaw ready to eat frozen food in the refrigerator or microwave, not on a counter.?       Thoroughly reheat food until steaming hot.?       Avoid soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined, and Mexican style cheese (hard cheeses, processed cheeses, cream cheese, and yogurt need not be avoided).?       Hot dogs and luncheon meats (cold cuts) should be heated (or microwaved) until steaming hot.?       Avoid refrigerated pates or meat spreads.?       Avoid refrigerated smoked seafood (Lox, Nova) ? okay if in a casserole and cooked.?       See advice for Large Atlantic fish (mako shark, swordfish, tuna, king mackerel) below.?       Avoid deli potato/pasta salads and coleslaw unless fresh and reliable.?       Limit caffeine to one cup of coffee or equivalent per day.

    ?       No smoking or alcohol.

Someone had mentioned not being able to consume artificial sweetener?  Is this true?

I choose to avoid it because we really don't know much about its long term effects.

  • Ah crap I ate hot dogs with DS. It was one of my food cravings for 3 days straight. I think DH boiled them though, so it should be OK.
  • Since I had GD with my 2 year old son I had to see a nutritionist. As far as artificial sweeteners goes Splenda is fine. She told me it doesn't cross the placenta. I use the H2O flavor packets as long as they are made with splenda and it helps me drink more H2O. And I also was tood that hot dogs just have to be heated up just like lunch meat. Does anyone actually eat cold hotdogs anyway? That sounds so gross...yuck!
