question about BM transport/warming...

So I know they say that BM is good at RT for 2-4 hrs...so let's say that I'm going out for a few hours with DS and anticipate that he will want to eat while we are out a couple hours later...can I take my milk out of the frig and put it at room temp for maybe 2-3 hrs so that it will be room temp for when he wants to eat? I've been putting it in the insulated pocket of my diaper bag but that's keeping it too cold and its a biatch to warm up when we are out and he's screaming..I didn't know if once it's been refrigerated if the rules change.

Also, anyone have any other cool tricks for warming it up when you're out? Running it under water in the bathroom isn't cutting it...I'm thinking about bringing a plastic cup in my diaper bag so I can put water in that and warm it that way...

Re: question about BM transport/warming...

  • I take it out of the fridge and bring it in the diaper bag to use several hours later- it's actually usually still chilly then but DS will eat BM cold. I researched online and found several posts on the LLL website that said it's ok to take out of the fridge and use several hours later. At home I use the cup method so it should work well on the go as well.

  • My LO will eat it a little chilly as well, but at restaurants and such I have seen peole just ask for a cup of hot water (or a bowl if you need something bigger). Another idea is maybe to carry a thermos of hot water, perhaps the lunchbox size. I only bring my cooler bag if I am goning to be out all day. If I will be gone 4 hours or less, I just toss the bottle in the bag as is. I figure it's been in the refridgerator, so it will take it awhile to even get to room temp.

  • I bring a bottle from the fridge and use it several hours later.  It is usually at RT by then.  Seems to work great and has presented no problems.  The only time I do the ice pack is if we are leaving all day and I need to bring several bottles.  I then try to take a bottle out of the ice pack ahead of time so it has a chance to warm up.  I think you can buy bottle warmers for your car at BRU.
  • we bought a lunch box sized soup thermos. Before we leave home I fill it with hot water then I can put the bag of milk into the thermos to warm it up. It works great you don't have to hunt for warm water. I also keep the milk in a bag w/ an ice pack.
