Adoption

Heard from our BM today

I set up a blog so Baby L's birthmom could check in whenever she wanted and see her grow up. I included the blog address in her latest letter and pictures we sent right before Easter. I got a comment from her on the blog today about how excited she was to check check it out, and how much she loved the pictures we just sent. She told me to enjoy being a Mom to Baby L. I was so touched. I feel like we hit the birthmom lottery.

One of the reasons I wanted to post this was because a lot of people lately have expressed concerns about open or semi-open adoption. I just want you to know that it CAN work, and it can be a good experience for everyone involved.

  • That's great!  It does sound like you hit the jack pot with your BM.  Wonderful to read.

Smile  Thanks for sharing.  I <3 hearing these kinds of relationships!!

  • I'm so glad things worked out so well for you, L!

It's really sweet of you to share it here, too.  I've been noticing many of the same concerns lately--heck, you all know I harbor some of them myself--and without this board, I would never have changed my view of how wonderfully an open adoption can work.  It's nice to see such great examples in action, and I can definitely vouch that it gives a whole new understanding of (and openness to?) open adoptions.

  • Dh and I talked about doing something like that for our BM when the time comes ! I think it's a great  way to stay connected !

  • Can I ask, is it a separate blog from your regular blog?  I just wondered...our caseworker knows that I write a blog. (We got into a conversation about it one day because she writes a blog, too.)  She has asked me a couple of times if I have given the address to DD's birthmother.  I haven't yet.  Maybe I should, though - it would give her more opportunities to see pictures of Zoe and what we've been up to...

Yep, it's a separate blog. I talk about everything under the sun on my regular blog (and it has identifying info in it), and i wanted something a little more private and baby-centric.

  • i think a separate blog is a great idea. this way the BM gets to look at it whenever it's a good time for her.

glad to hear you are having a good experience with the BM!...

After 7 years of marriage and 5 unsuccessful IVFs, we have been granted the gift of adopting a baby boy, born 4/21/11.

    Thanks!  That makes sense.
