Anyone's LO on Nutramigen?

DS is about a month old now and we have been going through pure hell. I think we may have tried like 5 different formulas, which most of them have constipated him. He is extremely fussy, gassy, has eczema all over his cheeks and is now refluxing and spitting up a lot with every feeding. I have taken him to his ped. and have asked for a referral to a GI doc, but they won't give me one. They said that his "point of care can be handled by a regular doc." Oh please! I'm at my witts end right now. We just started him on Nutramigen (reccommended by his doc) today but I'm not seeing any progress. His even more fussy today and hasn't pooped since yesterday afternoon. Does anyone have any suggestions? Oh yeah...I forgot to add that I suspect that he has a milk allergy. DD has a milk allergy.

Re: Anyone's LO on Nutramigen?

  • For my niece it was the only formula she could drink without projectile (sp) vomitting. She was on a couple different meds for reflux, seeing a GI specialist and was even hospitalized for IV reflux meds. The Nutramigen made it tolerable.

  • We were on Nutramigen, but now were switched to Neocate. This will be round 5 for us.

  • DS was on alimentum but then we had to switch to Nutramigen because it was what our medical insurance agreed to cover. Give it a few days it will help and if it doesnt try alimentum although I am told they're basically the same thing.
  • DS is on nutramigen and it has been the best so far.  However, please give it time before switching.  It usually takes anywhere from 5 days to two weeks to see the effect of formula.  It actually can make it worse to keep switching formulas.

On the first two weeks of nutramigen DS' digestion got way better (he was constipated for a week on soy).  However, he spit up a lot more.  Now over a month later he barely spits up.

  • I completely understand what you're going through although we had a pedi who referred up to a GI dr. after DD's reflux meds didn't seem to be helping.  Turns out DD had a milk and soy intolerance and it took us three miserable months to figure this out (along with two hospital stays because she would stop eating).

We had her on Nurtamigen for two weeks or so and saw some improvement but not enough to make her comfortable.  Once we saw the GI dr. he right away told us to switch to Neocate and non-soy rice cereal (since we were using this to thicken her feeds for the reflux).  I thought he was crazy since his answer seemed so simple but the Neocate did the trick.  We saw a huge difference within a few days and DD was completely off her reflux meds a month later.  The GI dr. did say it can take about four weeks to get a previous formula entirely out of the digestive system.

I would give the Nutramigen a few days to see if you notice any difference.  Also, will you insurance cover a GI visit without a referral?  If you could get in without a referral I would definitely go that route.  Or I would see another pedi and insist on a referral to a GI dr.  Good luck!
