Who is pregnant with a medical condition

And, who is pregnant with a MC that is rare?

I have something called Trigeminal Neuralgia. Its a horrible illness that requires me to be on seizure medication through my pregnancy. I cant survive without it.

I think that it would be easier for me to be pregnant with something that was more common, because I would find more support and would be able to learn about how to deal with being pregnant with THAT. But there is so little information about being pregnant with TN. It scares me.

  • I don't have them anymore, but several years ago my doctor found a large fibroid (18 cm).  Because of the location of the fibroid, the surgery to remove it weakened my uterus wall, and I'll be watched very closely throughout my pregnancy, and be delivered no later than 37 weeks.  (I guess that means I'm actually a November mom, but I like you guys.)  It's scary because of the high risk for my uterus to rupture.  If that happened, according to my doctor, there's a 30% higher risk for severe brain damage for my child.  It's something I don't like to think about.

  • I have a blood disorder called ITP (idiopathic/immune thrombocytopenic purpura). Basically it's an autoimmune disorder where my body kills off my platelets. So far my platelets have been at a reasonably safe level since I was diagnosed but I might need to be treated during pregnancy especially bc there is an increased risk of hemmorhgae and you aren't allowed to have an epidural if your platelets are less than 100,000 (normal is 150-400k, mine were 40k last time they were checked).

I'm hoping my platelets go up on their own but they haven't been above 80k since I was diagnosed. Sometimes they can go up during pregnancy though. We'll see. Treatment is with high doses of prednisone or an IV fluid called IVIG.

What's also scary is that the baby can be born with low platelets bc the anti-platelet antibodies can cross to the fetus :( If this happens they have to stay in the NICU until they go up, although it almost always resolves in a few days. Scary though!

  • I'm so sorry you have to deal with that.  I wish there was support for you being pregnant with that condition!  My MC is not that serious.

I have SVT (supra-ventricular tachycardia), which is an abnormal heartbeat. My heart beats 1.5 times for the average persons 1 heart beat on a normal basis.  There are episodes that cause my heart to beat so hard in my chest that I have a hard time breathing because the heart muscle is pushing into the lungs, and I get extremely dizzy.  The episodes can last 1 min - 1 hour.  The day after, I always feel like I am bruised from like I was punched in the chest.  I have 1-2 episodes per year on average.  I haven't been on any medication since I was 18 because it got less frequent/serious with age and I sort of grew out of it, and have very rare occurrences with it now.  I just stay away from caffeine and extreme heat, and will be extra cautious during my pregnancy!

Sorry you have to go through that. I personally don't have anything, but I have to keep on top of things for DS and his med schedule.

I hope they can give you some more insight at your appt or does your TN doctor know more you could talk to him about?

Unfortunately my ob doesn't know much about TN and my neurologist doesn't know much about pregnancy, haha. I'm thinking a group meeting is in order!

I know exactly why that is- my aunt has it. Very scary. My sister has and my father had cardiomyopathy. I'm no stranger to heart conditions. Sorry you UAE to deal with that!

  • I am so sorry you have to deal with that.  How scary.

I have a heart condition called inappropriate sinus tachychardia.  Basically my heart beats fast and out of rythym.  I was diagnosed about 11 years ago and I am on meds to control it.  When I was pg with my DD, my OB and my heart doctor just watched me closely.  The meds I am on can cause the baby to be smaller in the womb, so with DD I had a couple growth ultrasounds, luckily she was perfectly healthy when born.  I also can't BF because of the meds I am on.  Labor was the only scary thing since everyones heart rate goes up during labor, mine was really high and all the delivery nurses were freaking out, so that didn't make me feel comfortable.  Luckily I was fine, but I am a little worried about labor this time around.  I will make sure all or the labor delivery people know my situation.  Hopefully everything will be ok this time as well!

I work in Neuro! Mainly with seizures/stroke patients Smile What med are you on for the TN?

  • I was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure and high cholesterol at 19. I wasnt treated for it until i was 27. It's genetic for me and is really out of control without meds. (210/120 was not an unusual reading.) And my cardiac enzyme tests showed an imminent risk factor for heart attack. My veins have been weakened and the Dr's are worried about the blood increase your body takes on while pregnant It's not a rare condition, per se, but it is highly unusual in someone my age. Edit to add dropped words. :)

  • Right before I got pregnant, I was diagnosed with insulin resistance. Not all that rare, but something I wasn't expecting. Now I'll be treated like a diabetic throughout my pregnancy. Have to go take a gestational diabetes class and most likely check my blood sugar a number of times throughout the day. I'm hoping it can be controlled by diet and exercise, but we'll see.

    GL to all of you!
