When you were BFing just home from the hospital-

Did you avoid onions or anything? I didn't, but I'm about to cook for a friend (I wasn't going to do anything spicy, but was going to include onions and green peppers) and I didn't know if the onions thing was just a wives' tale or for real. Thoughts?

  • I didn't.  But I don't eat onions anyway.

  • Only thing that ever effected DS through me was chilli.

  • the only things I avoided were alcohol and caffeine. everything else i went trial and error on minus broccoli which my mom kept insisting I wait on but I ate probably during week two? It was fine....
  • I was gonna do this: https://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/01/cajun-meatloaf/ and mashed potatoes- sound ok?

  • Oooh! My cousin just sent me a list of "things to have more of" and "foods to avoid" while BFing. Gimme a sec and I'll post it.
  • I don't avoid much.  I eat a lot of onions and never have a problem.  They are all very cooked though.  I did notice that Gwen does not like it at all when I eat salsa (though no problem when I eat other spicy things.)

  • my DS had reflux, so that would have been too much peppers, onions, garlic and spices for him. However, I think that is an exception, not the rule. It took me months to figure all that out.

  • I ate cooked onions, I'm pretty sure - my mom was doing the cooking at that point.  The only thing that seemed to affect me was broccoli, and that was only the first few times I tried it.

  • Ditto on the spicy food.  I don't think onions were any problem at all.

  • I ate everything except chocolate (caffeine). The broccoli thing is real, I think, but I think the vast majority of babies aren't bothered at all by onions, etc.

  • I ate pretty much anything. If we had had a problem, I would have eliminated stuff.
  • I avoided super spicy food (but not regular spicy usually) and caffeine at first.  I don't normally eat onions, but I think they're fine.

Eventually though, I had to cut dairy and boiled eggs both of which aggravated reflux.  But it's safe to assume that just home from the hospital, she doesn't have these concerns yet.

  • I ate and drank everything.

I know I have a picture of me nursing DD when she is like 2 wks old holding a miller lite.  I am klassy like that.

  • The only thing I ate that I regretted was a bean soup someone brought. It was delicious, but E cried and cried and cried :( I'm pretty sure it was the beans.
  • nope, no avoiding onions/green peppers here.

our bradley instructor actually said that's the best time to drink because baby is done eating by the time the alcohol makes it into your bloodstream/milk and it's usually out (unless you're tying one on lol) by the next feeding so you don't have to pump and dump.  :-)

That was always my theory as well!  I nursed DS and a glass of wine together several times over the past 17 months.  Big Smile

Oh and I didn't avoid any food.
