Formula- powder vs ready to feed

on a post yesterday, most of you seem to use powder, why?  I did the math, which got to be very confusing so I may have been wrong, but it appeared that ready to feed was a little cheaper then powder.

Re: Formula- powder vs ready to feed

  • My Pedi recommended powder over ready feed but to be honest I didn't ask why Embarrassed

  • The 2 oz ready to feed bottles are way more expensive.  For us, the larger bottle of ready to feed would go bad before we would use it all.

  • Powder lasts longer and travels better.

  •    In Canada 1 case of ready feed ($45.00) lasts us 4 days, 1 can of powder ($28) lasts almost a week.  Big Price Difference.

  • It might be cheaper for you now, but when the ounces increase powder is the way to go. Unless you have the deep pockets for it. I miss the one scoop bottle days.
  • We use the RTF at the moment, as DS has reflux and tummy issues and his Gastrointerologist recommended the RTF over the powder as apparently it is smoother and easier to digest than the same formula in the powder version.  DS uses just about 1 bottle a day, the bottles are 32oz each.  Each bottle costs $5.84.  That's about $41 a week.  I use TONS of coupons though.  I believe around 5-6 months of age, as he outgrows the reflux we will be able to switch to the powder version, which I am sure is less expensive.  If it weren't for his medical issues, we would use the powder version.  It is more convenient because you don't have to keep it in the fridge and it is easier to travel with and it is way more cost effective.

  • We use the RTF.  DD is on Similac Sensitive RS and we cannot seem to figure out a way to get the powder formula to flow throught the nipple.  I think the powder is a little cheaper.
