Trying to get my little one on my health insurance. Does anyone have an idea if I should add her onto my vision and dental or can I wait? She is already on for the pediatrician. Just not sure about the other things?
I would get dental. My sister never added her youngest on dental and when she was about one and a half her middle child dropped the youngest on the driveway and she had to have an emergency trip to the dentist. It was quite pricey for them and she kicked herself in the butt for not putting her on the dental insurance.
I don't know about vision. But I work in dental and we recommend they come in at 6mo's and then come every 6mo's. It helps us catch anything that might need to be caught before it's a big problem. However the visit is typically $40-$50 for an infant and IMO doesn't warrant needing insurance. I would suggest adding lo next open enrollment. HTH
We kept DS off our dental policy for now because we read in a magazine that you should take LO to the dentist 6 months after the first tooth appears. So we figure if he manages to get his first tooth by 3 months and then take him to the dentist within 6 months of that we'd be looking at the begining of 2011. Even if we go over a month or two I don't think it would be the end of the world.
As for vision we did put him on our policy because it was only $.98 so it was kind of a no brainer.
It all depends... does it cost you anymore to add your LO. I have a family plan for health and dental so I just had to add LO's name with the insurance company. My vision plan is separate and allows for me to only include certain people so adding my LO would increase a few dollars. I say if it doesn't cost anymore then do it, otherwise you could probably wait until the next open enrollment.
if you don't add all three now, you'll have to wait for open enrollment at the right time. For us it was a no-brainer because I don't pay out of pocket monthly...so it didn't cost more to add all three right away.
