Seasonal Allergies and LO?

Hey guys. I have never posted on this board (I'm usually over on 6-12), but thought maybe some of you could relate since we're all in the same area!

Okay, so the pollen is ridiculous, right? DD seems like she is really bothered by it. Her little nose is running like a faucet (clear liquid), she keeps sneezing and coughing. I called the pedi's office and asked what I should do. They said to bring her in to be checked out to make sure it wasn't a sinus or ear infection. So I did, and the pedi said that DD was "too young" to have seasonal allergies and her symptoms were probably due to teething. DD has 5 teeth and getting her 6th one in now, but she has never acted this way because of teething.

So basically there is not much I can do besides putting saline drops in her nose and sucking her nose with the bulb syringe! Any other moms out there dealing with this, and are there any other tips you can give me that helped with your LO? Poor DD is miserable!! She coughs so much that she can't sleep or take naps. TIA!

  • all doctors say this and it drives me crazy because I do think they can get little sinus infections.

You can't really give them anything.  Your best bet is saline drops (do a few times a day) and to run a cool-mist humidifier.  Also, try and keep her on an incline in the crib if you can. We put a little rolled up towel under the crib mattress so it was at a slight slant.

  • DD's nose has run like a faucet since she was 6 months old.  I think we had a few weekbreak last year but for the most part it was nonstop.  Our pedirecommended Zyrtec in a smaller dose to try and see if it helped (when she was13-14 months) we weren't consistent with it and mainly used saline and a humidifier until recently (now 22 months old)and it helps. If we leave the windows open at night, or if we forget to give itto her before bed she'll be a bit congested and cough in the mornings andsometimes through the night.  Not sure what the earliest age Pedis willrecommend Zyrtec. I know my nephew  has hadallergies really really bad, like wheezing and asthma and had to be on anebulizer since he was 9 months old, and he has been on Zyrtec since then sothere are extreme cases. Sorry to ramble.  Hope this helps

This exactly.  Plus the bulb syringe.  Also, we do use Zyrtec for Gavin but I think 9 mos is a little too young for that.  I think we may have used a little Benadryl but not until closer to the 1 year mark.  I'm sorry, but I don't think age has anything to do with it... you can't live in Georgia with this kind of nastiness and it not affect you!

  • We just took Derek to the pedi this morning for this. He was at the pedi yesterday and fine for his 9 month appt and then voila overnight crazy runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing and sneezing. Our pedi gave us a script for Clarinex, which is an antihistamine. He had some this afternoon and it's like nothing ever happened. He hasn't sneezed since. She also said we could give him benadryl if it wasn't covered by our insurance but had to give me the dosage based on his weight. HTH.

  • Our pedi gave us the ok for zyrtec after 1 year, 1/2 teaspoon at night.  We've upped the dosage now to account for her age and weight and it really seems to help.

  • The docs told us that when DD was young too and I knew it was allergies. Now, she is on children's Claritin or Zyrtec twice a day during allergy season. They did allow Benadryl some when she was younger. Her nose still runs a good but, but I think it does help. Good luck!
