Should I let him fuss?

LO has decided recently that he doesn't like his bassinet anymore.  He doesn't cry, but just fusses off and on when I put him in it to sleep at night.  Last night I ended up taking him out and letting him sleep on my chest, and then the bed when DH left for work.

Should I just let him fuss it out, or should I try to find alternate sleeping arrangements?  It makes me nervous to have him in the bed with all our blankets and everything.

Re: Should I let him fuss?

  • Fussing is fine, screaming is not at this age.

  • I let Simon fuss all he wants. If he starts crying, I go to him. He usually will fuss/talk to himself for a few minutes, then he's out.

  • I will let DD fuss because often she will quiet herself down and go to sleep.  If it starts escalating into crying/screaming, I'll go pick her up.

  • I agree! Fussing is fine...we let our daughter fuss and she goes right to sleep witen 10 mins. If she starts crying I go in every few minutes and without picking her up, I rub her back and say "shhhhh" over and over and seh calms right down so I can leave again..and she will usually fall asleep!
  • hmm..ok - I'll try letting him fuss himself to sleep if he does it again tonight.

Also, it seems like sometimes he'll fuss for a few minutes, then sleep if I turn his womb sounds on, but as soon as the womb sounds turn off, he's fussing again (on another note, what is up with the three minute timer on those things - we need way longer than that!!)  Or he'll fuss, fall asleep and wake up 20 minutes later fussing.  I'm sort of wondering if something is wrong with him (gas?) or if this is just normal baby behavior.  He just started doing this the last few days - before that he was super sleepy all the time.

We keep our white noise machine on ALL NIGHT LONG for this exact reason. If he wakes up fussing, we pick him up and pat his back- he usually has a burp in there. Oftentimes, the pacifier has fallen out of his mouth and that's all he needs though.

  • I let DD fuss because she has started this as well when put in her bassinet.  I'll only pick her up if she' crying.  Normally she'll fuss herself to sleep.

The one we got from BRU is voice activated so when he starts fussing it turns itself back on which is really nice. It also has a light that you can either have come on or keep off. I really like it and it works so well to settle LO down.

Yeah, I have never really needed to use a pacifier before (we have used it off and on, but more to try it out than anything), but I have a feeling we are getting to that point.  I just really don't want to end up playing paci-guard all night. ugh.

Yeah ours is actually voice activated too - but it seems like LO has to be pretty loud for it to turn on, which at that point DH and are already woken up, so I just might as well reach over and turn it on for him.

What kind do you have? We got the bear and just took the noise maker out of it.

  • I had the exact same thing happen last night! DD usually goes to sleep in her crib within 30-45 minutes and then goes right back to sleep after every feed throughout the night. Last night she was overtired and I put her to bed at 8pm... she kept fussing, but never screaming, and we kept going in to calm her down... we finally let her fuss b/c we thought she'd fall asleep on her own and was just so tired, but she fussed off and on from 10-12... she'd fall asleep for 10-15 minutes, then wake herself up, fuss, fall back to sleep for 20 minutes, wake up, etc... by midnight I knew she was hungry again, so I fed her and ended up sleeping with her in the recliner b/c would not go back down! So frustrating... and she hasn't napped well today and has been extra hungry. I'm hoping this is her six-week growth spurt and that it'll be over soon??!! Good luck to you - I hope both of us have a better night tonight!

Yes! You just described EXACTLY what is going on with us.  I'm thinking it's a growth spurt.  I guess there is a three week one that I didn't know about.
