Anyone quit BF cold turkey?

DD is 1 month and was exclusivly BF and I was pumping to get reserves in the freezer.  I got my period (ugh) a week ago and noticed that my milk supply seemed lower and DD wasn't doing as well with feeding.  So I have decided to quit because I really didn't like it.  I am using my reserves to help her adjust to the formula and it is going really well. My question is has anyone quit cold turkey? How long does it take for you milk to dry up?  I hand express occassionally and ice to ease any engorgment. Thanks!

Re: Anyone quit BF cold turkey?

  • I stopped cold turkey with my first son...didn't try to bf this time around. Wear a tight sports bra and take sudafed (helps to dry them up!) Also, cabbage leaves on your breasts are supposed to help. Just make sure you cut a hole for you nipples so when they are leaking the pads are absorbing the milk and they are not staying wet with the cabbage.  The cabbage is cold too so it feels good when first applied. If I remember correctly I had a few tough days where I was very engorged and sore but once I got past that it got better. It was about a month before all my milk was totally dried up. Good luck!!  Just watch and make sure you don't get warm, red areas and a fever. Theses are signs of mastitus (sp?)

  • I stopped pumping cold turkey at about 10 weeks.  It hurt like hell, took about 2 weeks to dry up completely.  I wore a tight sports bra too, this really helped!  Took Sudafed during the day and benedryl at night.  Still got plugged ducts but no more bouts of mastitis (which is why I chose to stop pumping).
