Best sling/carrier for a big baby?

I already have a sleepy wrap (very similar to moby) and while I loved it when he was smaller he is so big now (probably 25 lbs) and he sags in it and when I wear him for more than 30 minutes I get a back ache. I also have a maya ring sling (not padded) and when I wear him in that my shoulder KILLS. I just don't feel like either is supportive enough for him. I want something that I can go shopping in, walk around, do chores, etc...

if you could recommend ONE type what would it be? TIA!

  • My son is about 22 lbs now at 5.5 months and I am really enjoying the Ergo. I can wear him 2+ hours front style and FOREVER back style.

Thanks! Is that what you're wearing in the pic?

  • Is there a babywearing group or a store that sells different carriers where you could try different ones out?  That is probably your best option.

I'm really enjoying my pikkolo, but there are ladies on here who hate it.  I've seen similar posts about the beco, the ergo, the RS, mei teis, woven wraps, etc.  I didn't initially like my ring sling, but I found better adjustment instructions on SBP and now it is the only thing I use for hip carries.  I wouldn't carry DS for hours and hours that way, but it is great for short neighborhood walks or getting in and out of the car to shop.

I wore him in the pikkolo yesterday on the front for abour 4 hours and it is even more comfortable in the back carry.  And I carried my 30 pound pre-schooler home from the park on my back with it over the weekend as well.

So, my answer is the pikkolo...but YMMV.

This. Everyone's body and needs are different so it's great to be able to try a few things in person.

I wore DS on my front in a mei tai from 6 months on.  Now I just use it for hip carries and I use my Ergo for back carries.  DS is about 28lbs, I think.

  • If I was only going to buy ONE carrier, i would get a woven wrap.  i'm partial to Storchenwiege myself.  If you like the sleepy wrap, your already partway to learning a woven wrap.  I have an ssc too and although I like it a lot, it's not as  versitile as my woven wrap and it's not comfortable for the longer carries.  DS is in a back carry for the grocery, walmart, park, etc. all the time.
