I feel like such a mean dog mom

We have two dogs - Calhoun and Callie - both cocker spaniels.  We've had Calhoun since he was a puppy and he's almost 7.  We got Callie two years ago as a rescue and she's 3 years old.  Calhoun NEVER has accidents in the house.  He can be trusted around the house so that we don't have to crate him.  He may tear up a paper towel every now and then, but that's about as naughty as he gets.  Callie, on the other hand, can't be trusted!  She still has accidents and will seriously tear some sh!t up if we don't watch her, so she has to be crated during the day and at night when we sleep.  We have had her crate in our bedroom, but she keeps me up all night.  We can't have a doggy bed/blanket in her crate because she'll pee on it, so her little nails scratch on the plastic tray of the crate all night.  AND she is UP and at em' at 6 AM daily and will raise hell until we let her out.

I knew something had to change before the baby was born, and I wanted to put the change in place before DD was brought home so Callie didn't associate the change with the baby.  So last night I had DH move her crate to the dining room :o(   I came in and got her this morning and she was whining in her crate.  Gah I just feel so bad!!!  But it's for my own sanity.  With a baby sleeping in our room in a few weeks, I just can't have her in there causing noises, etc.  She's just such a sweet little dog, I hate to hurt her feelings.

  • (((HUGS))) We went through the exact same thing with our little schnoodle Lucy. I hope your pup gets used to her new sleeping arrangements quickly. It just took ours a few weeks. We let her up in our room again now every once in a while and she thinks it's the biggest tail wagging treat ever. Good luck!

  • We started confining ours to the kitchen as soon as I got pregnant. As soon as I became PG, I couldnt be around them.  They smelled like dogs- ugh! Ick! Now they are used to it and there isn't dog hair all over my babies and furniture (they shed a lot).  I don't feel bad. I love them, but...they are dogs.

  • Aww don't feel like a mean mom, she'll be fine. Our puppy does the same thing. She's 2 now and still has to sleep in the crate in the kitchen in order for everyone to sleep well. It doesn't hurt her and now she even sleeps better in there than when on the very rare occasion we let her sleep in our room.
