Level 1 v. Preemie Nipples

Has anyone has used or preferred preemie nipples over level 1 for babies just born?  (Trying to figure out what to sterilize). My boys will be full term, but I expect them to be between 5 and 6.5 pounds, so not very large and they will lose weight at first.  I also heard that preemie nipples have a slower drip, which is more like the breast.  Should I sterilize the preemie nipples that I bought?  TIA.

Re: Level 1 v. Preemie Nipples

  • So excited for you about tomorrow!! Congrats on making it so far!!

As for preemie nipples, mine weighed approx 6 lbs (5.13 & 6.0) at birth/full term and didn't need the added slow drip. Our hospital gave us a huge stash of similac brand silicone nipples (pre-pkg'd, one time use) and those were the best!!

Maybe sterilize a few (if you already opened the preemi ones) to have on hand but my guess is that you won't necess. need them

  • We never used the preemie nipples we bought.  My girls were 5.14 and 6.3.

  • I was thinking of getting some preemie flow nipples too.  Mine are such gulpers that even the level 1's come out too fast sometimes.  I have found that the Wal-mart brand "Parents choice" nipples seem to work the best for us.
  • i was told by the nicu nurses that if your baby is full term not to worry with premie nipples since it makes them work to hard and then they become frustrated.  we used them when one of my sons had some feeding issues for a while, but other than that i would not worry about it.
