I prefer to learn from a real live person in front of me, so I took a class at my local AC Moore. Your local yarn store would more than likely be thrilled to teach you as well. Mine has a knitting circle every week.
You might want to check out Ravelry.com a knit and crochet community when you do start. There are forums there with experienced knitters to ask questions of as well.
