Absence Seizures?

Does anyone have a child diagnosed with these?  My son (almost 4) is getting referred for an EEG test, his doctor thinks he may be having them.  I'm trying to get as much info as I can without either freaking myself out, or convincing myself prematurely that he has them when he might not...the doctor also said he might just be a kid who tends to zone out a lot.  Many of the symptoms I see associated with absence seizures fit his behavior, but there seems to be some fine lines between "symptom" and "slightly strange but normal occurrences".

I'm not usually one to seek medical advice on the bump, I just thought I'd see if anyone has any experience with this.

Re: Absence Seizures?

  • No personal experience other than my friend's DS who was having petit mal seizures.  She just noticed (as well as family) that he was zoning out at times. It seemed to be triggered with lights from the tv. He has been tested and he is on several meds which seemingly are keeping the seizures under control. They said he could outgrow it with age (he is 5).

  • My childhood best friend's DD was diagnosed with this last year when she was 4. She is now on meds and gets testing regularly, but from what I am told is doing well. The meds seem to be curbing the absence seizures, but I do know they made her tummy hurt and made her tired. Last I heard they were trying new meds to reduce the side effects. My friend told me it can sometimes take a while to find the right meds that get rid of the seizures without causing side effects.

    Best of luck to you!
