High-Risk Pregnancy

New to this bored..

Just found out that I have GD and I am devestated. I know that there are many of you here and I am just looking for some insight on how you live your lifes and what I should be expecting. I literally just found out today. I am scared and feel that there was someway I could have prevented this. I am 27w3d along so I have a ways to go. Any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ladies

  • 1. it's really not that bad-- the diet is somewhat annoying and so is testing, but you can do it.

    2. it's not your fault at all.  It's just the way your body/placenta is handling the sugars.  The most important thing you can do is control it from here on out.

    3. I was dx at 26 weeks.  You're right it's a long time and even though I didn't get to keep eating the way I wanted as long as some I did get to start controlling my blood sugar earlier which makes me feel really good since it's best for the baby.

We all had the same reaction, the thing is to get out of that mood ASAP.  Trust us that are going through it already, it really isn't that bad.  I just have to watch how many carbs I eat each snack/meal & portion control.  I've been good at reading labels, and I still can enjoy a slice of pizza or ice cream at night, just can't eat the whole carton! I actually lost 2-3 lbs the 1st 2 wks by having less sugar in my body!  Sugar free jello is a great snack I've found.

The other thing to remember: it's nothing you have control over.  Just how your body reacts, even if you are the healthiest eater, so don't even spend time thinking how you could have prevented it, cuz you couldn't, and you don't need extra worry/stress.

Just follow your doctor & dietician, and the gals on here are great support!

    GL, you'll do great!

  • Agree with PP.  I definitely freaked at first and felt guilty (I didn't lose weight before becoming pg, I could have eaten better, blah blah blah).  But it really isn't your fault and the diet isn't so bad.

As I see it this is just another thing keeping us eating healthy for our LO.  The diet forces us to keep balance, watch our sugar intake, and eat regularly.  These are all things we should be doing anyway during pregnancy!

While you are waiting to meet with the dietician or whoever will help you with GD, you can begin the diet changes now.  You should eat 3 small meals and 3 snacks each day.  My guidelines are:

Breakfast 1-2 carb servings and 1-2 servings of protein (I usually have an egg on a piece of toast)
Lunch 2-3 carb servings with 2-3 protein servings
Dinner 2-4 carb servings with 2-4 protein servings
Snacks- 1 carb with 1 protein

A serving of carb is 15 grams.  The important thing is always to balance carbs with protein and fiber.  Think lots of veggies and whole grains.

Also milk and yogurt are considered carbs because of how they act in your body.  Avoid fruit juice, but eat fruit.  Also avoid anything that has sugar, honey, molasses, etc (anything that ends with ose) in the first 4 ingredients.

Once you get the hang of it you may be able to "cheat" a little but it is best to start out with the basics and go from there.

Good luck.  Take a deep breath and if you have questions you have a great support system on this board.
