RP from 3rd tri, IUGR in full term baby?

I wrote a week ago how I was frustrated that Asher hadn't grown since 33/34 weeks.  I had another biophysical scan last night while I was in L and D and he still hasn't grown so hes been officially diagnosed with IUGR.  He went from being in the 95th percentile down to the 25th-30th percentile.   But hes full term, looks like hes between 4.8 and 5.8 lbs.  But his lungs are doing well, looks like hes practicing using them, and he has enough fluid, so hes not in danger.  Looks like we'll be bringing home a small baby.  I had a lot of questions last night, but I was a little out of it with the meds they gave me.  So I guess what I am asking is how long does it take IUGR babies to catch up?  I know its different for every child, but do they generally catch up before the end of the first year?  TIA!

  • Seth was IUGR as a full-termer, too.  Stopped growing at 33w, born just shy of 38w.  He was 5.3 at birth.  Developmentally, he has never been behind, but his growth has never gone above the 10% for height and weight.  He's perfect....just smaller. =)

  • My DD was IUGR due to pre-e and stopped growing at 33 weeks also. She was delivered at 36 weeks at 5lbs 1 oz.  She was 95% for weight by 6 months and 80% height.  Now at 4 years old she is 75% height and 55% weight...she has been at that percentile for about 2 years. You are right it is different for every child and a lot of that depends on your and DH's size.  I am very tall (98% for women) but thin, my DH is very short (5% for men...would have had growth hormone as a child if they had it back then) and stocky.  It looks like DD is a mix (taller than she should be given DH's size but definitely a little stockier than I was at her age).
