solid food stages for 33 1/2 wker?

we just had our 9mos check up at almost 10mos.  ped wants us to start stage 2 foods.  no biggie.  he told us to wait on meats, because they're gross...lol.  wondering when you started finger foods like puffs and cheerios for your LOs.  would seem weird to wait until they're 13mos when they see him again to start these foods.

before i end up calling the ped, what do you all do?

Re: solid food stages for 33 1/2 wker?

  • we started puffs and mum mums around 9 months.  i felt ok with those "solids" since they just melt in their mouth and hard to choke on.  when we started meats, i would grind up cooked chicken, turkey, or beef and mix it in with sweet potatoes or another thick puree that he liked.  the meat in a jar grossed me out.
  • I started small pieces of bread (the size of a penny) with DS just last week. He's still working on a pincer grasp, but it's just the soft center of the bread and it melts really easily in his mouth. He loves it! I only give him like 3 or 4 pieces each mealtime for practice.

  • I would start puffs now.  We started puffs around 7.5 months actual (5 months adjusted).  There is some research that says it's important to start solids earlier because of where the gag reflex is in their mouth.  As they get older it moves further back in their mouth and it's better for it to be more forward so that they gag before they actually choke.  We were on all table foods by 1 year.  BUT my boys LOVE to eat and have done really well with solids.
