On Friday March 26th we were scheduled at the hospital to have a version, since my little man was still not head down. Little did we know when we went to bed Thursday night that he had other plans! Our bags were packed in case anything went wrong during the version. I guess he thought, "We're ready, so let's get this show on the road!"
At 3am Friday morning I got up to get a last drink before my 8-hour cutoff for the version. When I returned to bed, after using the bathroom, I felt a leak. At first I just thought that he must have just been on my bladder, so I got up to go use the bathroom again. When I got there, I noticed more fluid slowly leaking down my legs. Still not sure I was not just leaking from my bladder, I put on a liner, and returned to bed. I couldn't stop wondering about what might be going on, so I got back up, changed my now soaked liner to a heavier pad, and did a little internet surfing about water breaking. Then I returned to the bathroom to find that pad soaked through as well. Well, needless to say, I finally accepted what was happening and woke my husband at 4am. I wanted him to be 'on-alert' while I took a shower. No sooner did I get in the shower, than I began having mild contractions. They weren't too uncomfortable, but this combined with the knowledge that we were still breach, made me decide to call my OB. As I was doing a final rinse in the shower, I lost my mucous plug at 5am.
I got out, got dressed in some comfy clothes, and called the OB. They said to head to the hospital any time. My contractions began to worsen, as my husband decided to make coffee, shave, take a shower, smoke a couple of cigarrettes...It was a good thing I had packed our bags the night before, just in case something went wrong with the version!! We finally left the house shortly after 6am and arrived at the hospital around 7am.
We immediately went to triage, where an ultrasound confirmed that our little boy was still breach. A version was no longer an option because of the loss of fluid. We were told we would have to do a c-section. I was still laboring and getting VERY intense contractions that were about 2-3 minutes apart. They finally gave me Nubain to help with the pain, but honestly, it didn't help much. It actually made my blood pressure drop suddenly, and I got nauseous and then VERY hot and sweaty. The anethesiologist came back in and immediately thought I didn't look good, so everyone got me layed down on my left side and started packing cold washclothes all over me. I felt MUCH better!!!
We were finally wheeled into the operating room around 9am, where I got a spinal, which made me feel nauseated, so they gave me a med to counteract that, which made me somewhat groggy. I struggled to keep my eyes open and be aware of all that was happening. My husband told me all the gory details later, since he was allowed to watch, about people putting feet on the table for leverage, and all of the pushing and pulling of my insides before the OB propped her foot onto the table, put one hand on the top of my belly, put the other hand inside and pulled my boy out by his purple little bottom!
Austin James was born at 9:36am weighing 7lbs 13.6oz, and measuring 20.5 inches long. He got APGAR scores of 8 and 9, and was only monitored for a short time due to shallow respirations (likely due to the narcotic given to me in triage). He met me within the half hour in recovery, and before long, the whole family was moved to our room. We stayed until this morning (Monday). We had Austin stay in the nursery the first night so that we could both get as much rest as possible, although between nurses and doctors checking on me and Austin coming in for breast feeding, only the hubby got any rest. The other two nights we kept him with us, and I actually got more sleep!
