Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

when did you start time outs?

Just curious...

I feel like DD is still too young to understand and actually sit in one place for a minute. But maybe not?

I know friends whose daycare starts it young, but I just don't know how to enforce it at this age.

Re: when did you start time outs?

  • a couple of months ago.  (so maybe 20 months old).  I started once I felt he pretty much understood most of what I was saying.   I don't see how you could start it much younger or what benefit it would have.

here's a little article that I like on how to do them correctly:

  • We also started about 20 months.  I would tell her to get in the time out chair and she'd run and jump on it and laugh.

I used it when she was crawling outside through the cat door.  It went to a locked sreened in porch but, we didn't want her out there.

That's the only reason we've used it.

  • I started "pack-n-play" time as a way of limiting interaction with others when behavior dictated it at about 9 months old.  I am a Love and Logic parent and I see no reason to believe that a child that understands that crying=getting comfort cannot also reason cause and effect for other things.  The PnP time starts with a song and ends with snuggles and has worked wonders for things like throwing food, being naughty at the dinner table, throwing toys, tantrums, screaming without reason, etc.
