Experience with Dish or DirecTV?

We are moving to a place where only Time Warner Cable is offered and I have not heard good things about them.  We have never had satellite before so I'm looking for reviews and experiences with them.  I know they advertise a pretty low monthly rate, is it really that low after all the extra fees/taxes?  With TWC it's $9/box for digital cable and we have several TVs so the bill would increase a good amount.

Re: Experience with Dish or DirecTV?

  • I know plenty of people with both and have nothing to complain about.
  • We have 200 channels and we have two boxes that both operate two TVs with DVR. We also subscribe to the playboy channel which is $14.99 a month and our total bill is around $90. So, without playboy it'd be $75 or so. Not too bad IMO.

Oh, and I like having satellite. The only thing that sucks is when the weather gets bad you lose signal a lot. It's annoying, so just make sure you have a weather radio in times like those. Wink

    ETA: We have Dish Network.

  • It all depends on which package/# receivers you get.  I find it's cheaper than Comcast for the same services.  I don't watch a lot of tv, so I'm not a huge critic....it does seem like there are a ton of crap channels, but when you have 100's, there are bound to be crap ones.  We haven't had any issues!

We have DirectTV.  Also, we live in New England and have never lost the signal.

  • I have DirecTV.  Its runs $75 a month.  285 channels or so...a box in my room and a box in the living room.

No DVR or anything.  What I like about DirecTV is that I can control EVERYTHING from the internet.  Only once have I had to call to order something from PPV.

  • We have Directv and love it. We have 3 receivers (one regular, one regular DVR and one HD DVR) and get pretty many channels for around $80 a month). We also get a lot more HD channels standard then we did with cable. We get a TON of kids channels, which is really nice.

We've only lost our signal once from a thunderstorm. We've lost it a couple times from snow, but that's because of the position on our house. The dish collects snow. We just have to clean it off and its fine. Its only happened a handful of times the two winters we've had it and it doesn't bother me at all. I'll never go back to cable.

  • We had DirecTV when we lived in MI, so it's been two years and the equipment might be totally different. We LOVED having TiVo instead of a DVR, but we lost our signal quite a bit. Any time it stormed. That sucked. Granted, the guy who set us up was high as a kite when he came out and originally wanted to just hook the satellite up to our fence, so I'm not sure he did such a stellar job for us.

  • We have had DirecTV for the last 3 years since we have been living in a more rural area and cable is not offered. At the first house the signal would cut out everytime it rained but at this house (which is 5 miles down the road) it rarely goes out due to rain/storms and comes back quickly. At first I didn't like it because I was used to cable, but now I like it. The customer service is great and they are always offering specials for the movie channels. I didn't like that we had to sign a 2 year contract but we didn't have a choice. We pay about $75 per month right now and we have an HD DVR box in the living room, and a regular receiver in our bedroom. We have almost 300 channels I think. The kids channels are great...lots of options. They do free movie channel weekends quite frequently also, so if we notice and see movies we like, we record them for later.
  • I have Direct Tv, and I've never heard anything positive from those with Dish. The guy who installed our new dish (we upgraded after 6 years) said his wife had Dish put in and he wishes he had Direct tv. Having used my mom's Dish, I can say that Direct tv is WAY easier to use and has fewer problems.

  • We've had both dish and directv.  We just recently switched to direct because it's cheaper than dish.  Our alternative would also be time warner.  I haven't heard bad things about it, I just think satellite is cheaper.   I have nothing but good things to say about dish and direct.  I'd go for it.  =)
  • everyone around here has one or the other.  time warner is the only other option and it stinks.  we have direct tv (sprout, nickjr).  we love it.  we have three boxes, two HD ones and a regular one for our bedroom.  the downstairs has dvr as well.  no idea what we pay, but pretty satisfied.  we still get twc for teh basic first 20 channels so that we could watch the local news (snow days and such).  we also have nyc locals through them.

  • We have Dish and have been happy with it. We have an HD only package and DVR for about $40/month. The only 2 channels we don't have that I'd like are Bravo and Nick, but they're not worth an extra $20/month to us. We do get poor reception at times, mainly during snowstorms, but it's rare that we lose signal completely. We also have an HD dish for local channels.
