Success after IF

Hysteroscopy or do I need a D&C?

I have a polyp that will prevent me from going to CR if I don't get it removed and he said that if I get it removed by hysteroscopy within the next 10 days, I'll be ok.  And I can't be dilated.  Did anyone here just have the hysteroscopy to get a polyp removed or did you HAVE to have a D&C?

Re: Hysteroscopy or do I need a D&C?

  • I can't imagine why they would need to do a D and C for polpys.  That would be very unusual.

A hysteroscopy can be used to remove polyps - lots and lots of polyps and very large ones at that.

If it is a simple, single polyp, or a few polyps, they may be able to do it in office, but otherwise they'd probably perform the hysterscopy in the hosptial, under general anesthesia.  Your recovery would be limited to just getting over the anesthesia, as otherwise it isn't all that traumatic - you might be a bit sore, but that it is.

  • I don't think I explained that very well - a D and C means dilating the cervix, and going in blind to scrap out the uterus.  Kind of like cleaning frosting out of a mixing bowl, only you can't see and have a small hole to work with.

A hysterscopy means going in with very small tubes (so no need to dilate) one with a camera and one with mini scissors.  The camera locates a polyp (think like a mini stalk of broccoli) and the scissors snip it off, removing it.

Why you wouldn't do a D and C for polyps?  You can't see, and the scraper usually just pushes the polyp aside and passes over it.  It stays in place.

A D and C makes sense if you are removing gooey tissue, or lining overgrowth.  Not if you are removing polpys with the stalks.

Ok, thank you for the explanation, I thought that I may have to get a D&C because he specified that there can be NO dilation for some reason. And for some reason, I thought a couple of people last week said they had polyps removed in their D&C.  This makes me feel much much better.  Thank you!

  • I'm glad that made sense.

I've had a couple of hyserscopies done to remove polyps, in one case, a crap load of them from huge to small.  It wasn't bad at all.  Annoying that I had to go under in a hospital, but other than that, it isn't painful beyond maybe a few hours of feeling too poked and prodded.

  • When I had my hysteroscopy they also did a D&C and like what a PP said (about going in blindly) that's not (or at least it wasnt) true in my case.  They are in there with the camera so I doubt that it's just a blind scraping.  I did mine at my RE's (he has an OR there) and was under anesthesia.  The recovery was fine, a little crampy some light spotting, but nothing major.

  • Rox explained it well but I have a question. I had two hysterscopies. The first one was in the office and to insert the camera sniping tool they did have to dilate my cervix slightly I think. The 2nd was combined with a lap so no need to dilate asthenosphere device went through my belly button. I think. Maybe they suck the camera in the vhayjay on that one too.
  • I had a hysteroscopy and polypectomy. I don't think I had a d&c. They went in with a camera and removed a large polyp.

  • For a hysterscopy, they have to 'go in', so you get a very slight dilation, but on the scale of milimeters - no more than what they have to dilate as part of IVF.

  • When I had my polyp removed they did both at the same time. I think they also ran some pathology on the lining.
